Hi.

I mean if the plan is for Anand to have some meaningful tasks and responsibilities, fitting for a deputy president, and at least some actual power in the organisation then it seems fine.

How he was going to function in his new role was not at all explained though; at least as far as I could determine.

Have a nice day.

India's government is, at best, ambivalent about the war in the Ukraine. I don't know if Anand is under pressure.

My 2c:
Dvorkovich won by buying federations, same as always. However, he needed to team up with a foreign player, to show base support. He asked players around and was happy to onboard Anand. Literally, he's only a pawn in their game.

Hi.

I don't know.

Anand had a very short speech and it wasn't adressed. In theory one could try to read some body language if you look at him standing next while Dvorkovich tries to adress these things. Other than that I don't see how we'll get any indications.

I don't think Baryshpolets and Nielsen called out Anand specifically by name on how he can support Dvorkovich. They could have. Maybe it would have helped them somewhat in hindsight. Trying to force the opposing side to defend not once, but twice against what was effectively the biggest weapon (Dvorkovich's Skolkovo connections) that the Baryshpolets/Nielsen campaign had to hit the opposing side with.
Even if this had been incredibly successful it still wouldn't have made a difference on the outcome of the election though. A large majority of the chess federations do seem very prepared to look past Dvorkovich's Skolkovo and Russian government past.

Have a nice day.

Are there any links where Anand addresses Dvorkovich's current or past relations with Russia's war machine?

I doubt it. President and Deputy president are elected on the same ticket. Anand supports Dvorkovich.
Edit: Anand's speech at congress

I wonder why Anand thinks it is ok to not address this issue. Does he

- believe nobody cares?
- think it is not relevant?
- think it is best to ignore the topic for the sake of a smooth election (politics trumps humanitarian issues)?
- know there are damaging revelations and therefore believe he has to avoid the topic?
- not care?
- want to keep things 'simple'?
- act on advice/orders somebody else gave him and unquestioningly obeys?

No matter how much I think I cannot not come up with an explanation which would let me keep at least some respect for him.

Hello again.

For anyone interested the Fide congress was broadcast:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hm3XenS5Po8

I am watching some parts now.
Edit: there is some interesting stuff about Fide, but it is probably for some Fide discussion thread and not one about Dvorkovich.

Regards.

Hi.

Mr. Dvorkovich got re-elected for another four years as Fide president earlier today. The way I understand it he got 157 out of 194 votes with the closest contestant, Baryshpolets, getting 16 (with 5 abstentions and I guess a bunch of non-represented votes).

Former world champion Vishwanathan Anand is the new deputy president.

Have a nice day.

Hi.

I thought I'd follow up a bit on this thread.

Dvorkovich was at the candidates and is working on re-election. Substantive comments on the situation with backlash after his anti-conflict (he didn't call it war) statements were a bit lacking in the below interview. I think it's fair to say at this point that it seems uncertain how much trouble he is currently and/or was in.

Hi.

First let me clarify that I read incorrectly. The only mention of house arrest is actually for another important person. Dvorkovich is allegedly under criminal investigation and being forced to hand over evidence against others under threat of prison (only...). How personal freedoms are treated in such a scenario is not mentioned.

Source would be out of favour oligarch Leonid Nevzlin. See:
https://www.reddit.com/r/chess/comments/u3gr2q/according_to_the_third_bullet_poi...

One would hope some media tries to get confirmation at some point, although obviously it could be quite hard.

Have a nice day.

Hi.

Unconfirmed reports now of Dvorkovich being in house arrest and under criminal persecution.

Very hard times.

Hello.

Apparently some parliamentarian in Putin's party heard Dvorkovich was against the war.

Hello.

The more people, especially Russians and Belarussians, who oppose the war (and also any of the likely war crimes) the better. The more public statements about it the better. To actually take the next step and start criticising anyone responsible for the invasion is gonna be hard in both Russia and Belarus though. Not to say actually making change in the political system. One can argue both for the need from public figures with some sort of position of power to take a lead here and for such persons to not get jailed early on in any political movement.
