I would argue 5...Be6, blocking the e-file so that after 6.Nxe5 Qd4 is not unsafe, and Black is ready for an immediate ...0-0-0;

I wasn't familiar with 5...Be6. After say:
1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 a6 4. Bc6 dc6 5. O-O Be6 6. Ne5 Qd4 7. Nf3 Qe4 8. Ng5 Qf5 9. Ne6 fe6 10. d3 Nf6 11. Nc3 O-O-O 12. Qe2 e5, Black seems to have enough activity to compensate for his isolated king pawn.

Yes that isolated pawn is Black's biggest drawback, but he does have the open d and f files.

I would argue 5...Be6, blocking the e-file so that after 6.Nxe5 Qd4 is not unsafe, and Black is ready for an immediate ...0-0-0; it's been a while but Carlsen played this way once.  Interestingly after 6.Nc3 instead, in an open game Black can afford moving a piece twice with 6...Bg4, as White's knight is misplaced on c3; in this variation it belongs on d2 (after d3)

Yes, this is the line I was referring to:

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 a6 4. Bxc6 dxc6 5. O-O Bg4 6. h3
Bh5 7. g4 Bg6 8. Nxe5 Qh4 9. Qf3 f6 10. Nxg6 hxg6

You might consider:
1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 a6 4. Bxc6 dxc6 5. O-O Bg4 6. h3
Bh5 7. g4 Bg6 8. Nxe5 Qh4 9. Qf3 f6 10. Nxg6 hxg6

Do you mean 5...Bg4 6.h3 h5 and a later ...Qh4 ? If yes this is typical for this line - White can always force Black to exchange queens very early and often the pair of bishops too. That's exactly what White wants.
I would nominate 5...Qd6 if it weren't for 6.Na3, so instead my choice is 5...Ne7. Again White can force the exchange of queens, but 6.Nc3 Ng6 7.d4 Bg4 8.dxe5 makes ma a lot less unhappy than those 5...Bg4 lendgames as for a change it's White's pawn structure that's the inferior one.

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

hi I am interested in knowing the most dynamic system for black versus the exchange. I would like to win obviously, or have a sharp game.
