There is an interesting interview on the Perpetual Chess Podcast where they dive into the data on the most accomplished adult improvers in recent US chess history. Episode 346 with NM Todd Bryant.

If I recall correctly the most succesfull ones had one thing in common that they were very consistent in playing a lot of classical games year round. So I guess showing up at your club for a classical game every week helps more than playing a few tournaments a year (and get slaughtered by underrated kids) and playing blitz online.

That being said, the young prodigies from today play a ton of blitz online. If you do it very focused it probably can't hurt.

I think, it makes sense to play 15+ minutes games. My opinion, blitz is just for fun.

Well, you can't argue with results! Perhaps the best answer is that consistant effort and personal comittment are always the best idea, whichever path you choose.

I did not play much online blitz before pandemic but when everything was closed down I started to play online with team matches almost every day in both blitz and rapid and I develop my game furter and it has become my primary Chess training ever since.

Its possible to learn both openings, mIddlegame themes and emdgame themes if taking time to analys the games. If not analysing games it gives less but still practical exerince in the line. I play at Lichess and our districts team plays in Bundesliga div 1 from time to time so I met good players ar regular basis.

In over board after pandemic play I got 2nd place in City championship and 2nd place in Distric Championship, my best results ever in standard timecontrol.

I don't doubt your sincerity FMCharless, I just can't shake the gut feeling that properly analyzing the last game you just played is far more helpful towards improvement than just - playing more games. Perhaps this did not matter for your 2 friends as they were advanced enough to understand what had just happened on the board much more quickly. It is certainly possible that more chess can mean better chess. But there may be this quality versus quantity thing that has more to do with the actual player than the game itself. Or maybe, I'm rambling... Roll Eyes

the problem with blitz is that you can spend an entire lifetime playing it.

the good arguement about blitz is that you get more amount of games a day which means you play more games a year. that is partially important.

i have had 2 friends which specifically play 15min or 15 10 and they were master strength. they both attribute their improvement to playing that time control.

i recommend my students to play a set, or specific number of longer time control games, and then to compliment by playing as many other time control games they would like during the day.

Those comments were a good read, kylemeister! They go from 2007 - 2022. One at the end linked to a long article from the Sports Illustrated online archives, July 29, 1985. But the photos in the article had not been archived. On a lark, I checked that issue in E-Bay, found plenty under $10 U.S. each. So I ordered one! Now the pressure is on AOC to double-up on his Ginko Biloba and coffee daily dosage to get those synapses working again.  Wink

Re Fischer and blitz, I'm reminded of the Biyiasis thing.

Let me sleep on it and see if I can remember where I read that. The old synapses don't fire like they used to.

Not unwilling to do my own legwork, I went looking for the Fischer quote as above. I didn't find it, but I did stumble across a Fischer article on his blitz play. Pretty good read and besides who wouldn't like another Fischer article? It's older and so may be familar to some:

Enjoy!

@AOC,

Any chance you have a source for the Fischer quote? Not disputing it, just would like to cite the source myself if I use that quote in conversation.

TIA!

Some say any chess is a waste of time.

Blitz is good for entertainment. It can be good for practicing openings and the arising middlegames, although this requires some degree of cooperation from the opponents. But improving specifically at blitz involves some special skills that don't translate to the general game. The notably strong blitz player Bobby Fischer said of it, "It's not really chess."

Do you think blitz is a waste of time? In the last few months I have raised 200 points in blitz, but I keep making mistakes.
