I like 1.e4. But if I had a reputation as a competetive player who always plays 1.e4 then I could find myself facing some Sicillian perhaps 80%+ of the time. So much so that I would have to learn the anti-Sicillians if I hoped to win. But how to oppose what you don't know yourself? Since there are many variations of the Sicillian it stands to reason I would start from the top and work my way down (or inward); so from general material to the more specific variations. Along the way I might decide that some variation like the Najdorf will be my weapon of choice versus opponents who always play 1.e4 against me. And so I'd come full-circle - all because I loved 1.e4! You didn't say what you liked to play as white; consider that and what you'll have to defend against with your fav opening and that could prove a useful guide. Hope this helps!

Maybe start with an overview like Understanding the Sicilian before deciding on a variation?

I agree.

I also like to add that Najdorf is possible the objektive best Sicilian. The drawbacks are lots of theory and white are using 16 different start moves and lots of sidelines within each move. Najdorf can lead to both sharp play and a more positional battle depening on white choose. I also like to add that unless meeting at least 2100 Elo 90% of games will be anti sicilians.
