They redesigned the search function in Chessbase17, here is the relevant page (follow link, then go to Search Mask - Manoeuvres sublink):
https://help.chessbase.com/cbase/17/eng/index.html?000134.htm
Mabe you have to clone a preset search (e.g. Black sacrifices the Exchange on c3)) and adapt it to your needs.

here is the Chessbase tutorial, including a video by Sagar for "search manoeuvres". Hope it helps.

Hi Tony

thanks; by the way I think you were one of the persons that try to help the last time I posted this

here is some recollections (which I am not sure whether it is memory playing tricks)

i) a few days ago I had a look at 365chess data base and I think it was there, a long time ago, that I saw this game.
The format of the data base is updated but I recall some similarities between today and the time I saw this.
But at the time it was a data base with not many games.
Thus, it was a game of someone well known.

ii) to be honest and seeing Tony's post I cannot guarantee that white played fxe3 and Qxe3 (yes i saw some such games - see below)

iii) i tried to see "by hand" some games in chessbase and found two games (one with unknown players the other with A. Ramirez playing Black). The situation was like this
White had a rook on c1, a bishop on 3, king still in e1 and
the kingside bishop and knight have already moved (perhaps in d3 and f3 respectively). Black has a bishop on e7 and a rook on e8. Black plays Bg5 pinning the bishop.
White plays 0-0 and then Black plays Rxe3, fxe3,bxe3+ followed by BxRc1
I am not sure if it was not a similar game (idea), since the game i remember was earlier than the game by Alejandro

but in the idea described above, the exchange is only temporary since it is regained two moves later;
I thought (might be wrong) it was a "positional" sacrifice

iv) Tony, would it be possible to make a fie of games found?

Thanks,

I executed the search for games from ECO code B03 that contains "Black rook takes Be3" and "white f2-pawn captures Re3" and over 100 games popped up. I then remembered that in a lot of these positions the pawn is on f3, implying Qxe3 instead. Do you remember anything else about the game that I could use to narrow it down?

Same here, only running CB12.
From the tuto link, something like "bRe?-e3xB" searches for "black Rook coming from the e file takes a Bishop on e3". Hopefully, someone with chessbase15+ can try that

since Chessbase 15 (2019), there is a 'Search expert mode' where you can ask such things. See the link: https://en.chessbase.com/post/fun-and-instructive-the-new-search-mask-in-chessba...
They demonstrate how to search for Bxh7+. Can't run chessbase from work, alas.

Exchange sacrifice on e3 (Rook takes Bishop in e3)

I am coming back to an old post of mine.
Could not find it.

At the time of a famous game Grischuk Riazantzev where White exchanged the exchange on e6 I recalled a similar idea that I have seen with colors reversed (Black rook exchanging with a White bishop on e3)

Unfortunately, i have tried without success finding such a game. it is not a recent game I even thought it was an exchange with exd6 (e file open with rook on e8, bishop on f6, there are some variants where White plays Be3).
But my searches have been unsuccessful.

I wonder whether it is possible to search a data file looking for games with the move Rxe3. But if this is possible do not know how to do it.

By the way, there is one game with such a sacrifice (in fact it has two exchange sacrifices) by Bortnik against Volotikin.

However, the game I am searching has the sacrifice much earlier.

If anyone can help ... thanks,
