Hello.

There are some games with
1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 a6 3.c4 Nc6 4.d4 cxd4 5.Nxd4 e5 6.Nf5 d5!?
Which could also come about by
1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 a6 5.c4 e5 6.Nf5 d5!?

E.g.
Destruels Moreno, Vicente  (2425)   --   Andersen, Jens  (2340)
EU/C2022/sf  2 (-)  ICCF
2022.10.10  1/2-1/2

1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 a6 3.c4 Nc6 4.d4 cxd4 5.Nxd4 e5 6.Nf5 d5 7.cxd5 Bxf5 8.exf5 Nd4 9.Nc3 Nf6 10.Bd3 Be7 11.O-O O-O 12.Re1 Nxd5 13.Nxd5 Qxd5 14.Qg4 Bf6 15.Bh6 Qd7 16.Rad1 Rad8 17.b3 Rfe8 18.Be4 Kh8 19.Be3 g6 20.Qh3 Kg8 21.g4 Qc7 22.Kh1 Qa5 23.Qf1 Be7 24.Bxd4 exd4 25.Bxb7 Bh4 26.Rxe8+ Rxe8 27.Bxa6 Qxa2 28.fxg6 hxg6 29.Bc4 Qxf2 30.Qxf2 1/2-1/2

It seems playable and avoids
1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 a6 3.c3
Instead you may get the Rossolimo
1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5
Or
1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Nc3
There you can probably go 3...a6 without much trouble though.

You can also go for something other than 5...e5. Doesn't look to bad.

Have a nice day.

The move order 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 a6 somehow lacks purpose. White will likely continue 5.c4, where at least the alternative move order 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 a6 3.c4 Nc6 4.d4 cxd4 5.Nxd4 would have avoided the Rossolimo (2...Nc6 3.Bb5). There are games with 5...d6 Ne3 or 5...e5 6.Nf5 d5 7.cxd5 Bxf5 8.exf5 Nd4 9.Nc3, playable but not very inspiring for Black.

What does this gain?

Najdorf is typically with N on d7.
Classical is often without ...a6.
Taimanov black typically has not wished for both ...a6 and ...Nc6 without Q on c7 as this allows Nxc6. This latter point seems to be even more the case with engines recently arguing for this in various Sicilian positions

So, argument might well be that this move order offers the worst of possible worlds, with no real added flexibility.

In the Kozul Classical variant the pawn doesn't go to a6? 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 Nc6 6.Bg5 e6 7.Qd2 a6, if I'm not mistaken this is the most popular line these days in Classical. For the rest, I think you're right.

This 4...a6 still reminds me of Karpov-Taimanov 1977 (0-1), with 5. c4 e5. Black's last was adorned with "!" by Andrew Martin in his recentish book on the O'Kelly, but I suppose it might still be regarded as slightly better for White with best play.

Another thought is that 5. c4 e6 is equivalent to meeting 4...e6 5. c4 with 5...a6 instead of the standard equalizer 5...Nf6 6. Nc3 Bb4.

Hello!
Is there any way to take advantage of the rare move order 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 a6? If not why is this so rare?
5.Nc3 e6 or 5...d6 6.Be3 Nf6 looks decent
5.c4 and e6 and Nf6 looks good too
