Another observation re the "Keymer Variation" ... Keymer-Idani (also from rd. 3 of the FIDE Grand Swiss) went 1. d4 d5 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 c5 4. cxd5 exd5 5. Nf3 Nf6 6. e3 (Keymer had had this position 10 times, sometimes via 1. Nf3 d5 2. e3) a6 (one previous opponent played this, the others choosing 6...Nc6). Now instead of 7. Be2 which he played before, Keymer essayed 7. Bd3 Nc6 8. 0-0 Bg4 9. h3. This pawn sac (which wasn't accepted) reminded me of ... the Petroff, specifically 3. Nxe5 d6 4. Nf3 Nxe4 5. d4 d5 6. Bd3 Nc6 7. 0-0 Bg4 8. c4 Nf6 9. Nc3 as played a couple of times by Kasparov against Karpov in the eighties.

By the way, I recalled Mendonca in that video mentioning the possibility of N(c3)-e2-g3 in one kind of position. That happened to lead to a miniature today in Matthias Bluebaum vs. Vahap Sanal: 1. Nf3 d5 2. e3 Nf6 3. c4 e6 4. Nc3 Be7 5. b3 0-0 6. Bb2 b6 7. cxd5 exd5 8. d4 Bb7 9. Bd3 Nbd7 10. 0-0 a6 11. Ne2 Bd6 12. Ng3 g6 13. Ne5 Ne4 14. Bxe4 dxe4 15. Qc2 Nf6 16. d5 Bxd5(?) 17. Qc3 h5 18. Nd7 1-0.

(Old theory note: the position after 12...g6 was given as equal by John Emms about 25 years ago [via the 4. e3 QID]).

No-one is playing 2. e3 to gain anything, I suppose; just an easy, low maintenance repertoire.

About 1.Nf3 d5 2.e3 e6 3.c4

What exactly does white gain here, compared to,
  • say, 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 c5 4.e3 ? After the further 4...Nf6 5.Nf3 a valuable finesse, instead of the "Normal" 5...Nc6, is 5...a6 aimed against Bf1-b5 ...
  • or 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 a6 4.e3 ? Again 4...Nf6 5.Nc3 c5!? see previous.
It's well known that if black is willing to play the Tarrasch, move orders in the closed openings have little effect. There are some (but not many) independent systems, e.g. 1.c4 e6 2.Nf3 d5 3.g3 Nf6 4.Bg2 Be7 5.O-O O-O 6.b3 c5 7.Bb2 Nc6 8.e3, but these are hardly an improvement for white over the Schlechter/Rubinstein treatment of the IQP. The argument in favor of 1.Nf3 d5 2.e3 must lie elsewhere. If black plays ...c7-c6 perhaps it has more point. Does white have something tangible after 1.Nf3 d5 2.e3 e6 3.c4 a6!? ?

Max Warmerdam has 2 interesting Chessable courses about 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 c5 4.cxd5 cxd4 (the Von Hennig-Schara gambit) and 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 a6 (the QGD Janowski line, also featured in Sielecki's acclaimed course Keep It Simple for Black). But it turns out that White avoids all this with 1.Nf3 d5 2.e3 e6 3.c4. This ultra-cautious move order (think Andersson/Wojtkiewicz) is not for surprising Black, but for ensuring White won't be surprised (and will even be pleased if for some reason he enjoys the Slow Slav).

Great vid indeed.
The young GM is brimming with optimism:
- Sagar: What if Black plays d5-c6 ?
- Leon:  Aha, now we play d4 and we tricked him into the Slav! ...

If there's one point to this move order, it's to play Nf3 d5 c4 without allowing ...d4, more caution than aggression. White doesn't seem to play g3, could be interesting to compare this course to the relevant sections of "the e3 poison".

Hi all, I was just wondering if anyone got the new chess base DVD on nf3 d5 and e3 on move 2. I was wondering if he goes for those lines when white plays g4. Also just any general thoughts on the DVD. Thanks.
