So sad that the chess commentary world is entering a dark age. Chessbomb gone, chessgames owners died, ICC team has been gone for ages, chess24 was the last bastion and it sold to chess.com like so many before it.

I guess all we have now official website relays until someone spins up something again.

I'm curious on if the last part was actually clarified or if 3.2 requirement was just added (!?)

They are referring to this:
https://handbook.fide.com/files/handbook/Regulations_for_FIDE_Circuit_2023.pdf

It's unfortunate they put a rule for Candidates qualification in the FIDE Circuit document. It would have been far better to put the rule in the Candidates document, then in the FIDE Circuit document simply say "refer to the Candidates document"; less confusing if all the rules for the Candidates are in one place. The way they did it required a "clarification", which confirms that it was confusing. But at least they did the clarification now, instead of waiting until the FIDE Circuit was over...

Hi.

The fact that I've never seen anything about this requirement (3.2) rulesets or heard anything about FIDE announcing it is earlier is a large part of what makes it weird to me. These are the "FIDE Candidates Tournament 2024 qualification paths rules" (retrieved 20231130). Notice what I've underlined and compare to the clarification announcement (3.)

"FIDE Candidates Tournament 2024: Qualification paths

Eight players shall qualify for FIDE Candidates Tournament 2024 by the following criteria:

Path A. 1 spot – FIDE World Championship Match 2023, Runner‐up (Ian Nepomniachtchi or Ding Liren)*

Path B. 3 spots – FIDE World Cup 2023 (Baku 2023), three players who finish 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

If any of these players already qualified for the FIDE Candidates Tournament 2024 or the FIDE World
Championship Match 2024 at the moment of the beginning of World Cup via another qualification path, the qualification spot(s) shall be be awarded, in order of priority:
‐ the player who finished in 4th place in the World Cup;
‐ according to rating as in (E).

Path C. 2 spots – FIDE Grand Swiss Tournament 2023 (Isle of Man 2023), two players who finish 1st and
2nd.

If any of these players already qualified for the FIDE Candidates Tournament 2024 or the FIDE World
Championship Match 2024 at the moment of the beginning of Grand Swiss via another qualification
path, the qualification spot(s) shall be awarded to the highest‐placed player(s) in the final standings who
have not yet qualified to the FIDE Candidates Tournament 2024 at the moment of the beginning of
Grand Swiss.

Path D. 1 spot – High‐Level International Tournaments (HIT), the player with the best results during one
year (2023) in FIDE rated tournaments satisfying the below criteria who has not already qualified from
Path A, B or C. The winner becomes a qualifier before determining a qualifier by rating as in (E).

Path E. 1 spot – The highest-rated player by standard rating in the January 2024 rating list provided that
the player has played at least four standard eligible tournaments according to the criteria in Article 1.1
of the Regulations for the FIDE Circuit 2023 (see FIDE Handbook D.01.14), who has not already qualified
from Path A, B, C or D.

Reserves
If reserves are needed due to a withdrawal from the FIDE Candidates Tournament 2024, their spot is
allocated to a player who has not already qualified, in the following way:
‐ In Paths B and C, the next highest‐finisher in the final tournament standings, but not beyond 4th place.
If this fails to replace a player, then the spot(s) are allocated using the process in Path E.
‐ In Paths A, D and E, using the process in Path E."

Hi,
Fide rules for Candidates are custom-made for each occurrence.
The 2022 edition is there:
https://handbook.fide.com/files/handbook/Regulations_for_the_FIDE_Candidates_Tou...
There was no rating-based qualifier, except for a special case replacement:
Quote:

2. 3. If any replacement is needed, the highest-rated player in the FIDE May 2022 standard rating list shall be invited, provided he/she
has at least 30 standard games rated in the FIDE rating lists from June 2021 to May 2022.
In case of equal ratings, the following criteria, in order of priority, shall decide:
‐ number of rated games in the Standard FIDE Rating Lists from June 2021 to May 2022: the player who has played more
games qualifies.
‐ drawing of lots.

Guess they don't want a federation to rush this seat as China did in 2022

Hi.

As you may know the FIDE candidates tournament 2024 (+ a women's candidates tournament) will be played in Toronto, Canada.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Candidates_Tournament_2024
Eight players in double round-robin.

The last spots (circuit and rating) are soon to be determined.

I thought of making this thread specifically today as FIDE just published some "clarifications" on the rules:
https://www.fide.com/news/2771
I'm curious on if the last part was actually clarified or if 3.2 requirement was just added (!?).:

"3. Qualification for the Candidates 2024 by rating.
A player shall participate in at least four FIDE Circuit tournaments with a standard time control. These tournaments shall meet all the requirements of the FIDE Circuit Regulations, particularly both general (1.1) and country restrictions (3.2). clauses. Thus, out of the four above-mentioned tournaments, not more than two (one of which is a national championship) can be played in the same country. If this rule is not respected, the player is not eligible for qualification."

Have a nice day.
