Oh yes, I mean white can play this if they want.

I play a lot of French too, and there are a lot of gambits where the d4 pawn gets sacrificed for tempi Smiley This looks quite like one of them?

I'm confused about what looks attractive about White's position here?

An extra pawn and solid yes but he's cramped, the light squares are weak and black is ahead by about a million development tempi. Even a happy bishop pair for black to look forwards to if need be.

I'd imagine that black would score quite well in practical games.

I played a couple of practice games with my clubmates with both colors and the position feels much easier to play for White. Black has a bishop pair and better development, yes, but because of the closed nature of the position both of these factors are hard to take advantage of. Also the e4 pawn might appear weak in the long run while giving White a nice target and a nice f4 square for his knight. On top of that, White has already a protected passed pawn on d4.

However, I might be biased because I used to play a lot of French and Caro Kann with Black. For me the position in the diagram resembles a Caro in the g6 sytsem where a pawn for the other side is missing for some reason.

Additionally, considering how good the statistics for Black are after 6...Nbd7, this might be a very reasonable try for the White side if somebody happens to play this variation.

[Keres Variation]Interesting 9.Qb5 idea for White

I started enjoying this variation for the Black side:
1. c4 e5 2. g3 c6 3. d4 e4 4. Nc3 d5 5. Bg2 Nf6 6. Bg5 Nbd7 7. cxd5 cxd5 8. Qb3 Bd6

As according to the Megabase 2025 and lichess statistics this line seems to do exceptionally well for Black. The idea is that White cannot take the pawn on d5 due to Qa5+ and skewering 2 minor pieces on the 5th rank. However, upon closer look the move 9.Qb5 seems to solve this issue and Black has no satisfactory defense for the d5 pawn. Stockfish 17.1 says the position is still equal but I'm not sure if I want to play something like this with Black:
1. c4 e5 2. g3 c6 3. d4 e4 4. Nc3 d5 5. Bg2 Nf6 6. Bg5 Nbd7 7. cxd5 cxd5 8. Qb3 Bd6 9. Qb5 O-O 10. Nxd5 a6 11. Qa4 b5 12. Qc2 h6 13. Bxf6 Nxf6 14. Nxf6+ Qxf6 15. e3 (or even 15.Bxe4 if White is super greedy)

I'm not sure if Black has enough for the pawn here...

Developing the rook first might be a small improvement in that line but still I don't think Black has enough:
11...Re8 12. a3 b5 13. Qc2 h6 14. Bxf6 Nxf6 15. Nxf6+ Qxf6 16. e3
