I have adopted the Tromp for quick games in ICC, following a book by de la Villa. I very much like to face 2...Ne4 and 2...c5. Hardest are 2...d5 or 3...d5


Regarding 2...e6, de la Villa recommends 5.c3, not mentioned in the last entry...

I guess basic problem with the tromp is to play lines that lead you out of your repertoire with black

My main defence to 1.d4 is the Modern Benoni and I don't really trust these Benoni-style defences to the Tromp.
For what it is worth, I prefer 2...e6 3.e4 h6 4.Bf6: Qf6 and then
- 5.Nc3 Bb4 6.Qd2 d6 7.f4 e5!
- 5.Qd2 e5!?
- 5.Nf3(!) d6 etc
I like the ...e5 idea as it stops W clamping down with f2-f4 and can lead to the dark squares opening up quite nicely for black.  The drawback (perhaps this applies especially to the 5.Qd2 e5!? line) is that W can get a serious lead in development.  However, Black's structure is really solid and he should be abel to catch up eventually.
  
If sometimes we fly too close to the sun, at least this shows we are spreading our wings.

Everywhere I go, they all say that line with 7...e6 is the best response for Black to 7.Bc1 but you may try 7...d6 idea/plan:

1. d4 Nf6 2. Bg5 Ne4 3. Bf4 c5 4. f3 Qa5+ 5. c3 Nf6 6. d5 Qb6 7. Bc1 d6 8. e4 e6 9. g4 exd5 10. g5 Nfd7 11. Qxd5 Be7 12. Na3 O-O 13. Nc4 Qc7 14. Bf4 Ne5 15. Bxe5 dxe5 16. Qxe5

Does anyone know why there are not too many games with the line that was played in Hodgson-Wells Copenhagen 1996. I looked thru chessbase one day, and did not find too many with this line. Is Black (or White) very bad in this line. Is the verdict out on it.

For a long time now I have been having problems with the Trompowsky. Having looked at many lines I decided that 2. ... Ne4 3. Bf4 c5 is the most logical way to proceed, however there is one particular line I am having trouble with:

4. f3 Qa5+ 5. c3 Nf6 6. d5! Qb6 7. Bc1 / b3 

What are Black's best replies to these two moves (in particular Bc1 which I think is most challenging) and can he equalise, or does he have to accept a slightly inferior position? I certainly don't like the lines with e6 and the pawn grab Qb4+ and takes on c4 but is Black just being cramped with no counterplay if he doesn't go in for this?
