Isn't de la Villa's work quite dated now?

Does his analysis hold up under scrutiny?

Spanish is no problem for me, to read at least. Of course i'm interested, so much so that I would like to see a table of contents, the lines he advocates and so on...

10. e3 Bc5 11. Kf2 0-0 12 Bxc4 d6 13 Ne2 Nbd7 14 Nbc3 is dynamically balanced for both sides. But I fairly enjoyed playing this position for White. Davies' skepticism for this line for White was slightly surprising to me.

If you like this line, what do you do on 14...ne5, 15 na4 qb4 16 b3, then 16...b5!

Fernando,

if one (like me, lol) does not speak any spanish, is it possible to follow the de la Villa's book? Is it just analysis or lot of idears? How do you rate it?

I could have it sent to you, but it is entirely in Spanish...

Do you have the book by Wells? It mentions de la Villa, and draws from his analysis when he feels the need.

Wells doesnot like de la Villa's idea to play 3.Nc3 against 2...c5.

Let me know if you are interested. You can e-mail me your address, and I could contact La casa del Ajedrez for you....

I have to agree with Top (what?) the 2...d5 (or 3...d5) lines are looking very solid.

The problem seems to be, if you are a KID player, you are suddenly playing something more resembling a 1.d4 d5 opening.

In your c) line, I believe 5.Nd2 is satisfactory for white. de la Villa advocates for 5.Bd3 and 6.Be4, but I am happy with Nd2. Yes, the 4.f3 lines don't look like much...

Yo people, you know I just put up a post regarding this. I should have put it here, take a look, according to the new tromp book, bc1 does not look so good, but maybe a new move is out there. Yeah there is not many games in this variation. Not even chess pub gives anything too deep.

Ok people, if anyone has the book on the tromp by Davies, the first game in the book is S.Buckley-Gormally

d4 nf6
bg5 ne4
bf4 c5
f3 qa5+
c3 nf6
d5 qb6
bc1 e6
c4 exd5
cxd5 c4!
e3 bc5
kf2 oo
bc4 d6
ne2 nbd7
nbc3 ne5
na4 qb4
b3 b5!

ok ut to 16...b5!, all the old books, including the newest one by wells, never brought up this move, and said white was ok here.

So is this it? Is white busted? any reconmendations? in this line? or maybe should I switch to bh4? or i heard the lines with nd2, sacking the b pawn are ok? what about move 3 nc3 or pxp and make it like a sicilian? What does everyone think?

"I do not understand MNB's comment."
That is probably why Eric Prie is a GM and I will never be....  Cheesy My impression is, that Black has lasting pressure in that endgame and that Black has a lot of good ways to deviate earlier.

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

I just saw Prie's annotations on that grischuk game.  thought-provoking indeed, and both Davies and Wells are not much help here. will be looking for some improvements myself.

Dear Eric: the delayed stonewall update is excellent.  Grin It brings me back to my childhood days, when I used to play the Colle/Stonewall Attack but with no idea of so many subtleties! I also think the greatest threat to the Tromp comes from 2... e6 and especially 2... d5, so it will be nice to have as much coverage on these lines as possible Smiley

Especially when I commented that game !
I do not understand MNB's comment. He seemed to be a good pawn up in the ending...

I agree with Davies.

Grischuk played this line with Black recently, check it out, it may shed more light on this.

just to let eric know:

I really enjoyed the coverage of the Tromp 2... e6 3. Nd2, which i haven't seen covered anywhere else. More 3. Nd2 please. Smiley

Transpositions (to the torre or otherwise) should be mentioned in the Tromp e-book though.. because there are many Tromp players who have never played the Torre!
