As black I gave up on the accelerated drago due to the Maroczy bind, not really because it gives white an huge advantage, but because even with non-theoretical sidelines white always seems to maintain a slightly better position. Again and again stronger players just played like that against me, there was no real risk to them and I had to defend passive positions for ages. Hence if you are happy with playing calm positions, play the Maroczy.

If I'm not mistaken, Jansa and Watson have never had a game in either of the lines I mentioned. They have had a few 6. Bc4 Dragons (which I suppose could transpose into my line), but the game you mention which went 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 g6 6. Bc4 Bg7 7. h3 O-O 8. Be3 Nc6 9. Bb3 Bd7 10. O-O Qa5 11. Re1 Rac8 12. Qd2 Rfe8 13. Nf3 a6?! which, as mentioned my M. Carlsen in his review of Gufeld and Stetsko's Ultimate Dragon series (see http://www.chesscafe.com/text/hansen25.pdf), is bad for black. 13...Nh5 and 13...b5 are better.

Since I'm one of the few chessplayers on this earth who don't have a working database, I couldn't find that game..

Stil, I have the same problem as AmateurDragoneer and as far as I know there are no variations where you can castle long..

What is wrong with Jansa-Watson, Gausdal 1988?

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

I'm not too worried about 8...d6. My main concerns are 8...a5 and 7...Qa5 becase they prevent transpositions to the Yugoslav Attack. Does anyone have a good line against even of these two moves?

When I played the Accelerated Dragon, I always was happy to meet 5.Nc3 with Bg7 6.Be3 Nf6 7.Bc4 o-o 8.Bb3 d6 9.f3 Bd7 10.Qd2 as Black has avoided the highly topical 9.o-o-o line of the real Dragon.
After 10.Qd2 Black has moreover the extra option Nxd4 11.Bxd4 b5.
If it was not for the Maroczy Bind, the Accelerated Dragon would be much more popular than now.

What to Play Against the Accelerated Dragon?

This question has been bothering me for some time. Objectively, I should "punish" black with 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 g6 5. c4 and play the Maroczy Bind. However, thus far I have chosen 5. Nc3 and played 5...Bg7 6. Be3 Nf6 7. Bc4. Now, my first question is the line that goes 7...Qa5 8. O-O O-O 9. Nb3 Qc7 10. Bg5 (given as += in NCO) still advantageous for White or is there something better. I know 8. O-O is pretty much forced (unfortunately).

Secondly, against 7...O-O 8. Bb3 a5 is there a line where White can castle queenside (I'm considering maybe 9. f3 or 9. h4)?

Should I be bothering with all of this, or should I just learn the Maroczy Bind (and is it really that much better)?
