The sharpest way to play against the Maroczy is also the most risky: 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 g6 5.c4 Bg7 6.Be3 Nf6 (if you want to surprise your opponent, you might do some work to make a setup with Nh6 and f5 playable) 7.Nc3 Ng4 8.Qxg4 Nxd4 9.Qd1 e5!? and after 10.Nb5 o-o 11.Qd2 Qe7!??
Equality is not guaranteed.

Only play maroczy as white, but to me it seems the best way for black just to wait and see what intention white has. Afterall white has a space advantage, so blacks hope i guess is to let white overextend. Just developp harmoniously and prepare b5 or sometimes d5. At higher
level i doubt black play maroczy in do-or-die situations. He is just too cramped rely on it in a must-win situation. But as Kotov said in his book play like a grandmaster: To be cramped is not a serious positional drawback. There always have be other factors (like the bishop pair) before it get decesiv importance.

I've learned the Gurgenidze and while it is solid some lines are dead draws. What do forum members think is the system to play vs the Maroczy when a win is a must or you are paired against a lower-rated player?
