I am glad that the site has 'some pluses too' like 70 PDF eBooks updated almost every month, etc., etc.!
Seriously, though, which sections do you think should produce more games (but with less annotations) and which are too lightly annotated?
Thanks for the personal praise, much appreciated!!

I think Glen's idea is an interesting one and could perhaps be taken and modified in some way as to enhance the chesspublishing.com product.

My current feeling is that for the most part the Section updates contain far too few heavily annotated games for the money. Sometimes updates contain as few as five games which may or may not be well analysed, to my mind this is unacceptable. An Update should have no fewer than nine well annotated games. Some Section Heads provide ample games, but the annotations are often so light and general as to make the Update all but meaningless.

Every update should seek to enlighten and delight the subscriber in some way and to this end Paul Motwani's updates were always value for money, so too is Ruslan's Scherbakov and Tony Kosten's. Some of the other sections are very inconsistent in terms of quality and its very annoying and frustrating at times.

Maybe I'm being too critical, as the site has some plusses too. However my expectations are high and as a discerning consumer it is hoped that in the coming months Chesspublishing.com will strive with more vigour to build on those plusses and reduce the negatives.

I would advise that the top brass at Chesspublishing.com take careful note of the concerns raised on this forum. Remember, it costs a lot less to keep the customers u have than to try and win them back once they have gone.

Regards

Interesting responses.  Perhaps it is best to just leave things as they are.

Sounds like a dreaded database dump to me! I think Fed used to do a lot of games like this, but there were too many complaints ... Undecided

There might be an argument for this with highly theoretical variations (say like the Sveshnikov) where it's important to keep up with the latest important games, though I don't think there is much an argument for this in less theoretical sections like d-pawn specials (though the 2...c5 Trompowski lines do get a little wild...).  Maybe there could be a highlights section with selected important games in PGN style that barely missed the cut for selection for heavier annotation.  It's an idea that might good for people who want to keep up the latest novelties monthly without having to wait for Informator.  I'm not one of those people, simply for the reason I don't have the time or the demand, but some strong tournament players might appreciate this.  I imagine that the selection process cuts out several games that are important, so it probably wouldn't be too difficult to have an attached file of all the candidates for that month.  With little work, there could be a bookmark system like "TN" or "interesting plan" to indicate the importance of the game with little comment which would naturally come with the selections.  Yes, it would be rough, but some strong players might appreciate this, as long as there isn't a flood of information hiding the more annotated material.  I think the way around this would be to include separate PGN files each month without interfering with the regular material.  In this way, it might be a good idea without requiring much extra work from the section writers, if their selection process agrees with this method.

Gee, suddenly I can't wait for there to be more "Gods".  Grin

Ideally, the more heavily annotated games the better of course.  I just thought that the "lightly annotated" idea would add significant value without causing too much extra work.  Of course we've all been taught to beware the "!" and so on, but those marks can still be useful.

Dear God of the Forum... Wink

I beg to disagree with your proposal. I think the real value is to get games with plenty of (verbal) comments, so that we get insights.

What if you have games with a few scattered ! and ?! but have no idea why they're here ? You'll spend more time figuring out what they mean to the author than annotating the game yourself from scratch.  Undecided

I like the nicely annotated games that I get with each section but I think it would be nice if we'd could get more games in addition to these.  I was thinking along the lines of having about twice as many games but having some games with only !,?,!? style annotations.  Of course the occasional annotation of the type, 24...Ng4? (24...d5!?) would be great too.  Basically having the usually fairly heavily annotated games, but adding games with no verbal commentary (or very little).

I wouldn't think this would add too much to the workload of each section yet add even more value to a membership.  Then again I'm not the one who has to do the work.   Wink
