I've posted a John Watson quote on the Veresov somewhere on this forum, I've seen an enthusiastic remark on it by Richard Palliser, so I can't wait to see that 'refutation'...
On the other hand, there are plenty of 'refuted' lines around that are being played with succes all of the time...

I'm a Tromp player, so I appreciate all the attention Eric gives it. I would not object at all, however, if he wants to spend some time analyzing (or "refuting") other "d-pawn specials" openings. This section is for players on the black side, too, so if new games or analysis are available to strengthen play against the BDG, London, Barry, etc., I welcome it.

For what it's worth, I'm also particularly interested in variations of the Torre where it may be advantageous (or at least not disadvantageous) for White to transpose from the Tromp. E.g., after 1.d4 Nf6 2.Bg5 e6, the lines after 3.e4 are not entirely to my taste, so I have played 3.Nf3 in that position.

I say concentrate on establishing a core theory of the Tromp, but  fill in other areas when good games become available. Variety is the spice of life!

The Tromp.

i agree. The tromp is the only d-pawn "special" that is special and good.. if only we would have less blackmar diemer and more tromp!!

Dear Suttercane,

The thing is I also receive lots of questions, can you imagine that ! on the Tromp !
Yes people write to me, and like in a restaurant make reservations. But they have to wait their turn because it is a small place with lots of demands which will eventually all be met.
Some months ago there was a thread open "Too much tromp ?"
Where were you? The only answer I got was "For me there is nothing as too much Tromp" ?

So you seem to be the only nostalgic of the ancient d pawn specials content...
But you have to be aware that this is clearly not anymore GM Summerscale's KILLER OPENING REPERTOIRE book fans reserved section; now it vehiculates MY ideas, the ideas I am interested in.

Ideas that I also take by sounding out the forum.
8 active threads on the BDG !! All right, let's 'refute' it...
You can uderstand that an entire sphere of opening that has generated so much litterature, and games cannot be scanned in one update!
'Refute' the 1.d4 d5 Colle ? OK, it was easy.
'Refute' the KID Torre ? If there was only one game to comment on it , it would have been Jusupow-Kasparov 95, but it is not. Possibly because it was longer than 20 moves with an average elo rating exceeding 2200 ?
Now it is posted on the forum.
What would I add to that demonstration of the undisputable N°1 player of the planet at the time of the game ?
'Refute' the KID London ? The line is posted aside
'Refute' the Barry ? It is next. Sad
'Refute' the Nimzo Torre without c5, the Veresov, the Stonewall  ?  It will come.
And so on

I have played most of these 'sub-openings' there is no future in them.
The truth is that there is only one 'living' variation for White in all this jumble :
The Tromp.
The sole opening of the section regularly practised by Grandmasters as the ultimate test for any opening's validity. Smiley

I let follow up this message to inform what we are talking about in this TOPIC.

The founder of our beloved "d-pawn specials" section is GM Summerscale, who published a bestseller named A KILLER OPENING REPERTOIRE. In this opening repertoire book he connected different easy to learn white openings which are sound & attacking. Some openings we heard of the very first time (The BARRY ATTACK, 150 Attack...).

With CHESSPUBLISHING it was possible to get MONTHLY UPDATES to this openings, because GM Summerscale was responsible for the "d-pawn specials" section. What a great opportunity to send questions to the author of the book & getting answers & updates!

In June GM Prie took over our section.

1 year & 4 months are gone now and for the fans of the KILLER book only 5 monthly issues were interesting (from totally 16 issues)

16 issues ( June 03 till Sept 04):

10 times...Tromp
2 times....Anti-Colle... 3.e3 Bg4........we can use!
1 times....Blackmar Diemer Gambit
2 times....1.d4 e6 2.Nf3 c5...............we can use!
1 time....  1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 d6.............we can use!

So we can see that the main elements of our repertoire (The Barry & Colle-Zukertort) were never updated for nearly 1 1/2 years!

Weeks ago I sent a message to GM Prie in which I told him about this. In addition I told him that I am very satiesfied with the level of his annotations & surveys!

But there is no doubt about it, most of the subscribers wish to get updates to the openings from GM Summerscale's A KILLER OPENING REPERTOIRE book.

So let us go back to the roots,

SutterCane

Weeks ago I told GM Prie that he should remember that the d4-specials members of the very first hour are the fans of GM Summerscale's KILLER OPENING REPERTOIRE book. So it is about time to take a look at THE BARRY etc. again.

In THE BARRY ATTACK some key games are not published yet!

Greetings

I must say that I agree, I know the Tromp is important, but I have mentioned to Eric Prié a couple of times that it would be interesting to see something else occasionally! Perhaps you should write to him directly? Undecided
Nigel does vary his stuff a lot more, of course, but the way he concentrates on one variation at a time does mean that we see an awful lot more of the Spanish.

Hi Guys,

Just like to say great site and all that but what I find really annoying is that its often only the major openings that are covered most weeks. For instance where the dragons has it's own group which is excellent, I feel the d4 specials could almost be called the trompowsky and the e4 e5 could be called the ruy lopez. maybe do the same with roy lopez as with dragons? I reckon there is enough call for this as I'm quite sure there are enough people interested in them but whereas I play the dragon I have an aversion to the other 2 and would sometimes like to see a bit more fun in the e4 e5 like more kings gambit, lots of interest in the forum, or evans... Grin

Perhaps it would be possible to say every month take x number updates from y groups and when it was for a month heavily on the tromp don't bother. I have nothing against the tromp and find it interesting but man has only so much time and if one doesn't play an opening etc.
