That's how I've come to take up the Veresov : 3. Nc3
I'm not too fond of the swap if it is not necessary (i.e. after ...h6). I suspect Black can put the double-f-pawns to very good use, and that suspicion was confirmed by reading John Watson.
3. e3 is alright, too, but then again I prefer Nc3 to Nbd2.

My feeling is that if someone feels uncomfortable with 3.Bxf6 after 2.Bg5 d5, then the Tromp is a strange opening choice.

How do Tromp players here in the forum meet 2... d5?

Do you execute the Tromp threat (3. Bxf6) or play 3. e3, or something else? As a matter of curiousity, I'll be glad to know how Tromp players feel about the effectiveness of each of the 3rd move options for White.  Smiley
