Tromp with Bh4 certainly NOT where its at. Knew tromp pretty well some 15 years back when semi-active.  Bh4 was duff then iirc, remains so imho.

Even h4 better

Basically Bf4 or yer main-lining it.

Dont see that your 5...Nf6 is good for black. My simpleton evaluation - white got more bits out.

Double pawn sac - yes appears to have been worked out.

Where to go...that is more study time than I have at the mo alas ...let Palliser work thru that....

This thread is quite old now and on current evidence/analysis the double pawn sac initiated by 7.e4 in Chernysov - Grischuk no longer holds up.

The quiet line  1.d4 Nf6 2.Bg5 Ne4 3.Bf4 d5 4.e3 c5 5.Bd3 is also looking good for black after the surprising retreat 5...Nf6!.

Could the Trompovsky be in crisis? and if so, should Julian Hodgson be called upon to come out of retirement and save it. Cheesy

So how are people playing the main line tromp now that the double pawn sack does not work? What do do? I was thinking of playing the tromp just to cut down on the study time. What do people think of the tromp with bishop h4? In Davies book, looks like some wild play, but looks a little risky too.

Hi guys,
I see from your earlier post that Marting recommends

1.d4 Nf6 2.Bg5 Ne4 3.Bf4 d5 4.e3

What does he recommend after this - is it Wells' Bxe4 lines, or something else?

I don't have the DVD yet, but I am confident that the game in question is:

Chernysov(2531)-Grischuk(2724), Russian Club Ch.'s, Dagomys, 2005

You can check it out on   http://www.e3e5.com/petersburg/competitions/article.html?284 ;

Geof_Strayer provided the following information in another thread:

Faraday, thanks a lot. This is not one of the four games I found. Black played 11...Bh6 (iirc) and lost his queen.

MNb,

Unfortunately, I can't call up the games separately from the video (may just be my stupidity) but I listened again and AM definitely says Chernyshov-Grischuk Reggio Emilia 2005.

I've looked on chessgames.com and chesslive.de and can't find this game either!!  According to TWIC, the last Reggio Emilia tournament was at the end of Dec 2004 through early Jan 2005 and I can't find a mention of Grischuk.  I'd be surprised if he did play then as it would be very close to Corus 2005 starting.

On chessgames.com, Chernyshov has played the Tromp a few times but I've checked all the A45 games for 2004 and 2005 and can't find this one.  I've pasted the game score below - hopefully it's pgn-like so that you can copy into your database.  Apparently, it's the 9.Bc7 that is new.

Perhaps Andrew could let us know where to find the game?  Maybe there was another tournament held in Reggio Emilia but not called that?  I've checked the Olympiad (Spain) and the EU Club Championship (Grischuk played for NAO) but no luck.

Darth: Against 2...c5, the Bxf6 repertoire seems to be similar to Chapter 6 in Wells' book and games 41-43 in Davies' book (although again I haven't had time to watch in detail and compare).  Personally, I'll probably stick with the Vaganian gambit as I like the positions better and at my level, not many people will try ...e5.

I'm still unclear as to the idea of a BadBishop video on the Tromp; there's nothing on their website.  Where did you hear about this?

MNb, I feel the same, Davies trashed bc1 in his book, and b3, the one game he showed, did not look like something I wanted to play. Actually I was starting to look at bh4, I could see white probably beating black if he does not know the position well, but if he does, I am not sure about white. I cannot figure out which move I would want to play in the main line, 7 nd2, bc4 or d5. Then this is all based on Davies book. Wow 7 e4, there is like nothing written on that. That should be really interesting.

Faraday, thanks for the info, please let us know what you think. They say against the Vangardian (arrrggghhhhh, no one seems to give any good reconmendations against it), be interesting to see what Martin gives on bxn then.

So is there a chess base dvd and a bad bishop video coming out on it? If so I guess it probably be the same stuff.

As I am quite dissatisfied with both 7.b3 and 7.Bc1, I will take a look at 7.e4. But I can't find that Grisjuk game!? There are four other games with 7.e4 in my database.
Faraday, could you check this?

OK, just received the ChessBase DVD and had a quick look through the contents.  Boy, were my first impressions wrong!!  Here's what's on the DVD:

Introduction and 2 example games ~18 mins: Vaganian-Botterill (2....g6) and Vaganian-Jansa (Vaganian gambit - a classic Tromp attack!)

Themes ~ 46 mins:
    Bishops vs Pawn Structure
    The Big Centre
White sac's for an attack  1
White sac's for an attack  2
    Originality

Repertoire  (or Reportoire as it says on the DVD Tongue):
     2....d5  3 games ~35 mins.  Recommends early c4 with Nd2 unless prevented by ...Be6 then Wells' line of Nd2, g3, b3 preparing c4.

     2....e6  4 games + summary ~ 30 mins.  Recommends 3.e3 and a quick kingside pawn storm (g4, h4 etc)

2....c5  3 games + summary ~ 31 mins.  Recommends 3.Bxf6, c3, e3 variation.  AM says that the problem with the Vaganian gambit is an early ...e5 by Black.

     2...Ne4  6 games + summary ~41 mins.  Recommends 3.Bf4 d5 4.e3 and 3.Bf4 c5 4. f3 Qa5+ 5. c3 Nf6 6. d5 Qb6 7. e4!? sacrificing 2 pawns.  This is only based on one game (Chernyshov??-Grischuk, Reggio Emilia) but looks interesting.

Loose Ends  2 games ~7 mins

My initial reaction is favourable since I like Andrew as a commentator.  He keeps you interested and injects a good dose of humour now and then.  Although the funniest bits are the screen captures of his face that launch the various chapters!!

Just to correct my earlier post, this does NOT require Fritz to run - a new version of ChessBase Reader is included on the DVD.  I seem to have a problem with running more than one chapter on my PC.  If I finish one part and try and launch another I get an error and the Reader shuts down so at present I have to close ChessBase Reader and restart it for every section. Does anyone have any ideas?

Will report back with more of a review when I've watched the DVD a couple of times...

It's funny that Martin would have material advocating the Tromp, since I've read a couple of articles by him discussing anti-tromp systems.  One of them, advocating 2...e6 3...h6 and an early d5 seemed to be quite reasonable for Black.  I wonder what he suggests there, and how it squares with his other analysis:

http://www.jeremysilman.com/chess_bits_pieces/091203_trashing_tromp.html

He also mentioned the e6/Be6 idea, somewhere else, but for some reason that didn't strike me as terribly effective.

Gambit/Bad Bishop seem to have gone very quiet regarding their DVDs and there hasn't been any news for a while. Sad  However, ChessBase have just released a DVD for Fritz entitled "Trompowsky - the easy way" by Andrew Martin.

I don't have any details of the repertoire, but by staring at the screen shots at http://www.chessbase.com/shop/product.asp?pid=249 it looks like he recommends the 3. Bh4 variation vs 2. ... Ne4 (a la Davies) and the Vaganian gambit vs 2. ... c5 (i.e. 3. d5 Qb6 4. Nc3).  Can't make out much more (especially the first screenshot - any ideas?) but I have ordered it and will give more details when I receive it (hopefully this week).

Note: this is one of those FritzTrainer DVDs which require a copy of Fritz to run in although I didn't see that on the ChessBase page.

I heard that Andrew Martin is coming out with a DVD from bad bishop on the tromp. Anyone hear about what lines he is covering?
