The book seems to have been delayed. It should not be published before September 2008 (source: Everyman site)
To Mr Palliser (whose books I really enjoy working with): Did you notice a very interesting game played at the European Cup by Vachier-Lagrave (playing black) in the critical 1.d4 Nf6 2.Bg5 Ne4 3.f3 Qa5+ 5.c3 Nf6 6.d5 Qb6 7.e4!? Qxb2 8.Nd2 Qxc3 9.Bc7 ?

BTW, is Starting Out: The Trompowsky coming out?

You will find more informations here: http://www.everymanchess.com/display.php?id=463
The book should be out in May (Europe) or June (US)

Is this book going to cover the Pseudo-Trompowsly (1 d4 d5 2 Bg5) or just the regular Trompowsky (1 d4 Nf6 2 Bg5)?

Hello Richard,

I was wondering if this Starting Out book will be an introduction to the opening with lots of explanations but no 20-move theoretical lines or whether it will also feature detailed theory, with novelties here and there. I don't play the Trompowsky, but if there is enough theory (in-between your average Starting Out book and a "Play the" book), then I will have a look at it when it is released.

I'm looking forward to this. Wells' book was phenomenal but is now almost 5 years old.

Richard, what is your general approach with respect to 2...e6, and
specifically do you think White's chances with 3. e4 in response are significantly better than suggested in
Andrew Martin's article "Trashing the Tromp":
http://www.jeremysilman.com/chess_bits_pieces/091203_trashing_tromp.html
or are you recommending, say, 3.Nd2 here?

Thanks, Pantu!

Still playing the opening from time to time. Unfortunately I also quite like moving my c-pawn!  Wink

Unfortunately not every fascinating sub-variation (and there are lots!) can be fully covered in a Starting Out, but I am trying to show readers that it is a fun opening to both play and analyse!

Ok, the line I was thinking of is, 1.d4 nf6 2. bg5 ne4 3 bf4 c5 5 d5 qb6 6 nd2. I am going to take a look at that one, since the others seem to be having problems.

If he has played it, so much the better. Jolly good.

Pantu - are you chair of his fan club btw? Do like the time references. Very biography. Reminds me of Elvis Costello's music as being pre- and post-beard years.

Dont have the Davies or Martin material. Dont mean to sound cocky, but just didnt fancy spending money when they probably know less than me  - neither play it, I did for a long time. Palliser doesnt, but may bank on his research skills and conscientiousness.

Richard did actually play it, and only it, for quite some time (mainly his late/post-uni period, and after he wrote out his entire repertoire in Play 1.d4!).  My twic database has only 12 games of his on it, but I know for a fact he played a great many more that never made it to the bases.

Also, at the British championship in Scarbourgh 2004 for instance, he had 3 1 d4 e6, one 1 d4 d5, and two 1 d4 Nf6 2 Bg5 in his games as white....

Wells book very good.

Best material though is actually here - Prie really impresses me. Very much on the ball. More so than his countrymen against Scotland.

Last one I bought was Gallagher but dont have it here. Think have a game in that book iirc - Bibby-Ward when I was a young 'un. Unsound game, but bit of a lark. My limited approach at that time: forward and turn right.

Bh4 line - dont have board here, can barely remember. Sorry to not have anything useful. Have to ask you to trust me on that - may save you points.

Tromp with Bh4 certainly NOT where its at. Knew tromp pretty well some 15 years back when semi-active.  Bh4 was duff then iirc, remains so imho.

Even h4 better

Basically Bf4 or yer main-lining it.

Dont see that your 5...Nf6 is good for black. My simpleton evaluation - white got more bits out.

Double pawn sac - yes appears to have been worked out.

Where to go...that is more study time than I have at the mo alas ...let Palliser work thru that....

Bibs,

Ok, I have to look at the games a little more, but bh4 in the Davies Tromp book, did not look too bad. Some interesting positions. Then again, some games white looked like they were just holding on. You remember what you did not like about it.

Arrruuuggghhhhh, yeah what to do if the double pawn sack is not working. I think I saw it in the Gallager Tromp book, where white plays nd2 against qb6 and sacks a pawn. Maybe I will look at that.
