Hi Viceroy, thanks for this tip, Queen Alice is indeed a great place to be.  It's my first in correspondence chess and IMHO it's a better way to improve your game than over-the-board play because you get so much more thinking time and are not stressed out by your clock ticking.  And it's not necessarily a "waiting" game either since you can play up to 25 games simultaneously! I've started with 6 and am pretty busy already...  Thee site itself is very well thought out and user-friendly.

This a great place for email chess and it's free too. Computers/chess engines are not allowed, but books are.

I have found letsplaychess.com pretty useful. They advocate not to use the comp, but people do. Trick is to play openings were comp is of little assistance.

I find it very useful to 'test' theoretical lines.

And in openings like, say, main line Ruy Lopez, understanding is very important...

Of course, it warrants noting that a few BDGs were played publicly using this format (not the instant messaging, but in one of the threads).  I thought it was a very good idea...

Are there any rules about this at all (in corr chess) ???

Depends.  The American Postal Chess Tournament is adamantly opposed to computer use and makes a point of declaring computer use illegal.  The Canadian Correspondence Chess Association threw its hands up in the air a few years ago and accepted that they couldn't really prevent it (apart from making banal moral statements like "you're only cheating yourself"), and that a good correspondence player could frequently beat a computer--plans are typically of the essence, and the computer's calculating speed becomes less of an issue (in theory)...

I was thinking of playing some correspondance.
Sounds like a lot of fun.

Any suggested sites to check out. Or should i just hit my friends up for games?

1. See the Daring Defences category; there have been several games with the BDG.
2. The ICCF (biggest corr chess organization) allows consulting all kind of sources (you are lucky if Kasparov is your neighbur) in email chess.

P.S. Leave the computer databases out of it as this defeats the purpose entirely.Obviously people won't know if your using one but you only cheat yourself!

I kind of agree with your statement, but:

In OTB chess I guess(!) there are....
Topalov may neither have really read the rulebook from cover to cover....  Wink

For a while now i've read threads in where peoples' opinions were in total conflict with others.I think that instead of arguing why not just play.Im just wondering if anybody would like to play a bit of correspondance chess here on chesspublishing.com.It would be so simple.

1) Challenge someone via instant message.
2) Everytime you come online you can make a move via instant message.
3)Agree a time period with your opponent,e.g if they have not made a move within 2 weeks they automatically forfeit the game.
4)As we Irish say it would be of craic(fun).

Any comments, challenges or ideas give me a shout.

P.S. Leave the computer databases out of it as this defeats the purpose entirely.Obviously people won't know if your using one but you only cheat yourself!

Regards,

DarMc
