I guess Eric's changed his mind?
Revising one's opinions is of course not a bad thing in itself, but it can become a habit.
.
Regarding 1. d4 Ktf6 ; 2. a3, here is what is to be read in Eric's NIC article :
2. ...e6 ; 3. c4 c5 ; 4. Ktf3 is pleasant for White

1.d4 e6 2.a3 Nf6 3.c4 is OK for White

3.c4 is playable
It's a good thing I stopped posting in that thread, or we might eventually have read "3. c4 loses".

Another example:
If, dubitatively, you are not yourself a 1.d4 d5! player as Black it is difficult to imagine the pleasure it is when your opponent does not enter the critical Slav lines!

1.d4 d5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.a3 c6 4.Bf4 intending 4...Bf5 (4...Qb6?! 5.Qc1) 5.e3 e6 ; 6. c4 fully comply with my views.
After 1.d4 Nf6 2.Bg5 e6 3.e4 c5 (but remember 3...h6 is critical too) 4.d5!, I've seen Black try 4...d6, 4...h6, and 4...Qb6.  Against the latter 5.Nc3 Qb6 6.Bd2! is an interesting gambit but I won't garuntee it's soundness.

"1 d4 Nf6 2 Bg5 e6 must rate as one of Black's best lines at the moment. Then 3 e4 c5!? is very interesting, but also problematic for white is 3 e4 h6 4 Bxf6 Qxf5 5 Nc3 Bb4! Naturally 5 c3 is also possible, but then the French positions after 5...d5 appear comfortable for Black? Indeed it's even tricky to find serious improvements on Dishman-Ward which looks good for white at first glance. So what should White do against 2...e6?", IMRichardPalliser

Like Stefanova, I recommend 3.Nd2, ready to transpose into a classical French Steinitz-Rubinstein after 3...d5 4.e4 dxe4 5. Nxe4
I tried it out in the 4N this season and got a nice position, effortlessly, out of a sort of improved Torre, against Mr Peter Taylor, although I suspect that, after 3...h6 4.Bh4 c5, 6.c3, instead of 6.e3, may be more precise, keeping the option of playing for e2-e4. ", GMEricPrie

It's not refuted, but 3. ...c5 is very challenging. The best reply is probably 4. d5, although an easy edge is not on the cards.

But I thought 3.e4 is the mainline Sad. You mean, it is refuted?

Instead of going into the rather tedious Torre with 3. Ktf3 , 3. e3 or 3. c3 (by the way Eric, I'm surprised you don't recommend 3. a3"!") White can also avoid 3. e4 c5!? with 3. Ktd2 which is the most flexible move in the position.

Now 3. ...h6 ; 4. Bxf6 (4. Bh4 c5 leads to Torre-like territory again) Qxf6; 5. c3 d6 ; 6. e4 g6 ; 7. Bd3 Bg7 ; 8. Kte2 0-0 ; 9. 0-0 Ktd7 ; 10. f4 e5 transposes to the line 3. e4 h6 ; 4. Bxf6 Qxf6 ; 5. c3!? (the other main move is 5. Ktc3. It's not clear which is better but they certainly both carry more punch than the Torre transposition 5. Ktf3). A clear advantage is not easy to demonstrate, but at least White has avoided the challenging 3. e4 c5 line, while affirming his central presence.

Instead, 3. …d5 (which Eric would no doubt punctuate this with “??”) gives White a choice between 4. Ktf3 (this time with a nice pull), 4. e3 c5 ; 5. c3 Ktc6 ; 6. Bd3 Be7 ; 7. Kte2 with or without the switch to a reversed Stonewall structure with a subsequent f4 and 4. e4 ed ; 5. Ktxe4 which is a direct  transposition to the Burn variation of the French (3. Ktc3 Ktf6 ; 4. Bg5 ed). 3. …Be7 ; 4. e4 d5 is clearly an inferior version for Black of the classical variation of the French (3. Ktc3 Ktf6 ; 4. Bg5 Be7).

Critical of course is the immediate 3. ...c5. If White does not want to drift into the aforementioned Torre dullness he should consider wheeling out the odd-looking 4. Kte4!? when 4. …cd  ; 5. Qxd4 Qa5+ (5. …Be7 ; 6. Ktd6+); 6. Bd2 Qf5 ; 7. Ktxf6 Qxf6 ; 8. Qxf6 gf ; 9. e4 and 4. …Be7 ; 5. Ktxc5 Bxc5 ; 6. dc Qa5+ ; 7. Qd2 Qxc5 ; 8. Bxf6 gf ; 9. e4 confer rather favourable forms of Open Sicilian for White. More problematic is 4. …d5 ; 5. Ktxc5 Bxc5 ; 6. dc Qa5+ ; 7. c3 Qxc5 ; 8. e3 when although White has bagged the dark-squared Bishop, Black’s centre makes up for this to some extent.

In conclusion, 3. Ktd2 it is not the answer to all White’s dreams, but it is well worth considering.

White should not play 3.e4?! but 3.e3 or even 3.c3, 3.Nf3 all of them transposing into the Torre.

The problem, then, is when you get to know a lot about the Torre subtleties and you understand that, for the sake of an unsignificant loss of a tempo with h2-h3, placing the bishop on f4 presents only advantages compared to g5!

This ( 1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 e6 3.Bf4) will be the subject of the next update with some Colle-Zukertort by Tony for the 'd pawn specials deviants' Smiley

1.d4 Nf6 2.Bg5 e6 3.e4 c5

What should be played here? The statistics seems to be extremely bad for white.
