Perhaps a prudent question might be to ask what isn't regarded as 'chicken' against the Blackmar Diemer?

Suffice it to say that if being a pawn up for insufficient compensation straight out of the opening as black is being 'chicken', then I am Colonel Sanders! Wink

If only being a pawn up in the Najdorf was so simple...

How can one even seriously debate this ? White has blundered a pawn in return for some development and Black sensibly avoids entering early tactical skirmishes. This is not a matter of style, but of common sense.  LDZ considers it unsporting for Black not to offer White a glimpse of a counter-chance, but he does not realise that it was up to him to seize that chance himself on his second move.

What? Uberdeker, you are flat out wrong! Blundering a pawn on the second move? Looks like you don't understand that the BDG is 1 d4 d5 2 e4 de4 3 Nc3 Nf6 4 f3 NOT 1 d4 d5 2 e4

Also, does the King's Gambit blunder a pawn? No. Yet both the King's Gambit and the BDG have common themes. Both go for development, a strong attack, and use the open f-file.

Now, I challenge Mr. Uberdeker to a match, G/60, on the Internet Chess Club. Let us see you demonstrate your skill in an over-the-board match against me.

  I await your response, sir.

The gauntlet has been thrown. Do you accept?

Personally I play to win, or to draw if that is the best I can reasonably hope for in the given position.  Correspondingly I try, within my limited talents, to judge chess moves by the degree to which they might facilitate these ends.  I do not judge moves for their supposed beauty or daring.

It is a matter of taste, I suppose, but I don't know why anyone would play this game with any other attitude.  I have no use for romanticism in chess.  I aspire to be what Anthony Santasiere disparagingly called a "technician of victory."

Reminds me of a line from way back, I think it was James Schroeder writing about Larry Evans:  "They [maybe Santasiere and his acolytes] have already accused him of boring his opponents to death; if this is a new way of winning, I would like to learn it."

Speaking of whom, in one of Evans' books there was a listing of openings characterizing each in terms of things like how "active" or "passive" it is for each color.  Maybe now we need a table for "chickenness" ...

German no thanks, but Polish and Russian would be interesting.
Thanks for clearing up. Avoiding the BDG to get a good game is chicken, accepting the BDG and chosing a solid setup to get a good game is chicken, everything that allows Black to get a good game and everything you don't like to meet is chicken. I understand completely.  Grin

5...c6 is chicken. Solid setup? Well, you can try the Euwe and Bogoljubow defenses. At least they are not as passive and cowardly as 5...c6.

Ok, let's say his next move is 5. f4. Then he is the -f4 tempo up on an advance, which should be relatively beneficial.

Not really. Apart from the useless -f3, White is another tempo up as it is his move.

That tempo he needs to clear f3 Smiley

What do you expect when Black chickens out into a French Defense?
That said, I had decent results with playing f4 in tournament games.

In common English this means: 1.d4 Nf6 2.f3 is inferior because of d5 3.e4 e6 4.e5 Nfd7 5.f4 c5. Whenever LDZ uses the word chicken out please read Black plays a very good defence, probably leading to an advantage.

The more I look at this line the more it looks playable for white. However I would play 5. c3 rather than 5.f4 If 5...c5 then one possibility is 6.a3 This is really unexplored territory.

For sheer entertainment I'd play 4..Ng8 and watch white self explode in his attempts to punish these chicken moves.

After all it is just an advance French with the ridiculous bonus of f3 for white.

Hmm, challenges, challenges. A year ago, Lev challenged me to a match on ICC. I accepted  and I haven't heard from him since. Could it be that he is ... chicken ?!

Oh, one more thing: Would you like to play a match against me on the Internet Chess Club, with a G/60 time control?

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.
