e4 c5 Nf3 Nc6 Bb5 is playable,
Nd4 now is inferior I believe, against Nd4 Nxd4 is correct, a later c3 is also often good in this positions.

e4 c5 Nf3 d6 Bb5+ is not really good, you don't give up your white bishop for nothing,
Bd7 is the correct answer, Nd7 instead trys to complicate the game more, but gives somewhat justice to Bb5, therefore I prefer Bd7 and white must give up his bishop, a strategic advantage for black, that cost him nothing, you really want to play this? Maybe e4 c5 Nf3 d6 d4 cxd Qxd4 could be also for you!?

On 3.Bb5 Nd4 I only have the old note 4.Nxd4 cxd4 5.c3 a6 6.Be2 d5 7.Qa4+ Bd7 8.Qxd4.
The point of 3.Bb5+ is of course not avoiding d2-d4, but playing it in better circumstances. The idea of 3...Nd7 is to get the pair of bishops and play for a win. It is a quite old main line. You are right, that 4.d4 cxd4 is a bit dubious because of 5.Qxd4 Nf6 (e5 6.Qd3 and White still can play c2-c4) 6.Bg5! (with 4...Nf6 Black avoids this) e6 7.Nc3 e6 and White has various options with prospects of an opening advantage. This all according to my not recent, but rather reliable source: Dutch IM Paul Boersma, 1981.
I have always suspected, that 3...Nd7 is popular on Najdorf aficionados, because of 4.d4 Nf6 5.Nc3 cxd4 6.Qxd4 e5 with a structure similar to the Najdorf.

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

Two questions about Bb5 lines

I played Bb5 in two recent games, and both of my opponents chose lines that I haven't encountered before:

1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 Nd4!?

I chose 4. Nxd4 cxd4 5. 0-0 on the grounds that this should be better for White than the corresponding variation after 1...e5, since Black still has to use a tempo to get the f8 bishop out.

1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. Bb5+ Nd7

My copy of BCO2 gives 4. d4 Nf6 as the only line here, which I find a little dubious, as I thought the point of 3. Bb5 was to avoid playing d4! I assume the idea is that if Black takes on d4, you can recapture with the queen more easily now that ...Nc6 is impossible.

Does anyone know of any more recent theory on either of these lines?
