It's funny, I have observed that many who use this argument in actuality often have the time but not the inclination or energy required to study the Open Sicilian.

I disagree a bit with this part. I feel that they don't realize that developing and maintaining a repertoire with 3.Bb5, 2.c3 or even 2.d4 or 2.Nc3/3.f4 demands as much time and energy as a repertoire with the Open Sicilian. White usually has a wide choice against each of the Open Sicilians and it is really not necessary always to play the hottest variations. At the other hand I know from experience how timeconsuming the Morra Gambit is. Palkovy's book on this opening takes more than 300 pages and he has not researched all transpositional options! And theory of the Morra Gambit develops quite fast in important lines as well.

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

It is not clear to me that White can prove a real advantage in the Open Sicilians, either, particularly against the Najdorf and Sveshnikov.

If I can quote the new expert John Shaw, on the front page of this months update, "Serious players in search of an opening advantage should be playing the Open Sicilian. Therefore, my approach is to assume that the reader is mainly interested in playing the black side, although I have a few thoughts for those who feel the need to play such lines with White."

I think quite a lot of club players would rather see a 50/50 split of 'viewpoint' - I play anti-sicilian lines as White to avoid the main lines because I don't have the time to study them. I suspect many of Mr Shaw's readers feel the same.

What does the forum think? Updates biased to Black, White or a 50/50 split?

It's funny, I have observed that many who use this argument in actuality often have the time but not the inclination or energy required to study the Open Sicilian.

Absolutely nothing wrong with such an approach particularly if one is honest about it. As John Shaw also said in that update, playing the Anti Sicilians is more of a lifestyle choice than a search for an Opening advantage.

I look forward to John's future updates, may they be timely and merry and bright.  Wink

Seasons Greetings one and all,

Maybe it was a bluff! As he is known as a player of Anti-Sicilians (as White!) he decided to start with an opening gambit that pre-empted possible criticism that he is too biased towards the White side! Roll Eyes

Objectivity is all very well, but I want to beat the Sicilian without wasting half my life on the open lines! LOL  Wink

I do think the subject matter is too narrow to make this a 'Beating the Anti-Sicilians' forum, so I suspect there will be plenty of 'white side' material.

Most opening books have a bias, even if they are not overtly the 'winning with' type book. Chess author's naturally write to an audience, which makes me a little worried about the introductory comment from John Shaw. He's a very good opening theorist, so I suspect the Anti-Sicilians will still be full of interesting updates.

What we need are honest evaluations of positions - not the promotion of black or white. This is the idea of books "Winning with...", "Beating the..." - but usually leads to a disappointment somewhere. I very much appreciate the attidute of Mr. Shaw   Smiley

Hopefully for both sides. For me anyhow.

The point about lifestyle choice a valid one, though whether quite as he meant it, dunno! Suspect most here working f/t, many probably with families, both of which push one away from open sicilians due to time pressures. Non-opens an unfortunately pragmatic choice for us working, parenting hobbyists.(Tho below say 2000 rating probably no matter.)

Opens very much a young (unemployed?) single man's endeavour in my opinion.  Reading one's Beating the Sicilian 3 while waiting in line for the dole cheque.

He might have said this, but I notice that the games split was about 50/50. Wink
