Diagram is picture of chess board position.
What they do ? Nothing... you can look at them in posts like in chess books.
On chesspublishing forum, you cannot insert JPEG file in one post...but you can post special text  (beginning with "fen" end endring with "fen") which is displayed as diagram.

It is done by making the tag (fen) reserved, similar to how the italic tag works. So when you put stuff between fen-tags the format and font are automatically set. The format is iirc a 8x8 table and the font is a black or white square with a piece in it (or not of course).
These fen-tags do nothing more then telling the server that a certain format needs to be set and gives the appropriate formatting to the browser. So the formatting is defined on the server and you could do the same for any other kind of formatting needed. But it will only work on your website of course (since fen is not standard HTML).

So when you view the source of the HTML page you wont see fen-tags, but you will prolly see a lot of table-tags.
  
If nothing else works, a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through.
