The Sveshnikov Gambit one looks like a line for black vs that White set up. Not that the set up isn't very respectable - lots of strong GM games if you have to look in a database,

It just won't be a full repitoire for white Smiley

Hi all,
Are chapters 6, 7, 8 good ways to play with the 2 Nf3 move order? It looks like it would be a mini repertoire vs Sicilian.   One just needs a system vs early e6, g6, Nf6.  Oh and in chapter 6 just pick the best way to deal with d5...  The lines are I am talking about are:

The Sveshnikov Gambit
(1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Nc3 e5 4.Bc4 Be7 5.d3 Nf6 6.Ng5 0-0 7.f4 d5)
7. Is e5 really so bad?
(1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.e5)
8. Forcing Black to Defend
(1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.e5)
  thanks,
Zatara

I bought the book yesterday.  The production quality is much better than the DW:1.e4 e5 (which has poor quality paper and spine cracks easily).

My superficial reaction is quite positive!

Had a brief glance at this yesterday- 6...h5 v be3 closed sicilian isn't bad , Wells anti c3 sicilian looks like it could cause a major reevaluation of this position.

Yesterday I´ve got my copy. Well, of course anyone needs only some chapters of such books (in my case only four: 4+5+10+12) but I don´t regret this purchase. - Not  much time so far to go through but I´m already very much impressed by Well´s long article (42 pages) in chapter 4, in terms of analysis as well as concerning presentation. Very fine!

How ironic is that, as these are the only chapters I'm interested in as well.  Wink

I agree that those two lines are less tactical, but one of the criteria for a DW is a line that has been unfairly neglected.

I think that is the case for both of the lines you refer to.

To me the list of contents is a bit disappointing; I'm maybe interested in 2 or 3 of these lines, and that's low for a Dangerous Weapons book.

Also, they are stretching the "Dangerous" concept now, aren't they? I thought 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.e5 Nd5 4.g3 was about as solid as it could possibly get in the Nimzowitsch Sicilian! Also 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cd4 4.Qd4 Nc6 5.Bb5 Bd7 6.Bc6 bc6 is a less tactical line than the main 6...Bxc6.

I'm pretty certain that it is a recommendation for White, given that White is the player who gambits the pawn. I wonder if this section will also include coverage of the related gambit 5...e5 6.d4, since opinions vary considerably on this line (from +/- to completely equal).

It seems to be a good choice for the 'Dangerous Weapons' series - when I analysed it several years ago, I eventually found an antidote for Black although White's resources were by no means exhausted in my analysis.

The contents, extract and introduction are available in the PDF extract that Everyman has online, but for convenience I will present the contents here as well:

1. Action on the h-file
(1.e4 c5 2.Nc3 Nc6 3.g3 g6 4.Bg2 Bg7 5.d3 d6 6.Be3 h5)
2. A Twist in the c3 Sicilian
(1.e4 c5 2.c3 Nf6 3.e5 Nd5 4.d4 cd4 5.Nf3 Nc6 6.cd4 d6 7.Bc4 de5)
3. Neither Too Early nor Too Late
(1.e4 c5 2.c3 d5 3.ed5 Qd5 4.d4 Nc6 5.Nf3 e5)
4. Danger with the d4 Gambit
(1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 g6 4.0-0 Bg7 5.c3 Nf6 6.d4)

5. Become a Chameleon!
(1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 e6 4.c3)
6. The Sveshnikov Gambit
(1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Nc3 e5 4.Bc4 Be7 5.d3 Nf6 6.Ng5 0-0 7.f4 d5)
7. Is e5 really so bad?
(1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.e5)
8. Forcing Black to Defend
(1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.e5)
9. Crossing White's Plans
(1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cd4 4.Qd4 Nc6 5.Bb5 Bd7 6.Bc6 bc6)
10. A Turbo-Charged King's Indian Attack
(1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 3.g3)
11. Following in Staunton's Footsteps
(1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 3.c4 Nc6 4.Nc3 Nge7)
12. A Remedy to the Nimzowitsch
(1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.e5 Nd5 4.g3)

John Emms wrote chapters 1, 5, 10, 11 and 12; Richard Palliser wrote chapters 3, 6, 7, 8 and 9, and Peter Wells wrote chapters 2 and 4. The series introduction is identical to that in other books in the 'Dangerous Weapons' series (except for 'Dangerous Weapons: The French').

I skimmed the extract (which covers the illustrative game to Chapter 5), which seems of the usual high quality of the Dangerous Weapons series. Out of all the lines given, I was only aware of about 6 of these lines, and most of those I had discarded as being innocuous. I will certainly be adding this book to my collection! Cheesy

I'm confused, is this a recommendation for White or for Black?

Will there be a chapter on the rare but interesting 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 g6 4.c3 variation?

Another idea could be to present a repertoire for White against the Hyper-Accelerated Dragon based on 3.d4 cd4 4.Qd4.

Could you please post PGN for this game? And could you compare the line that you played with what GM Nigel Davies recommends in Gambiteer I?

Thanks

Years ago, I tried answering 2.c3 with 2..d5 followed at some point by 0-0-0.  I gave it up as too risky, but it would be great if someone could make that sort of an idea work.

2.c3 Qa5!? is an interesting idea, I know it's been covered in an SOS article already but that was a while ago now. Even Tiviakov on his DVD admits he doesn't know how to secure an advantage here (although he doesn't go into any detail).

Also I haven't seen 2.Nf3 d6 3.Bc4!? covered from White's point of view before (admittedly I don't have a great many sicilian sources) which would be interesting.

I don't know how "mainsteam" the authors are prepared to go or whether the chapters will be on lines like 2.Na3, 2.b3, 2.a3 etc. but  2.Nf3 d6 3.c3 and 2.Nf3 e6 3.b3 can be quite dangerous too and of course 2.Nc3 Nc6 3.Bb5 (or even 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Nc3 e6 4.Bb5) has been very popular recently. Any dangerous ideas for either colour in those lines would be nice to see.

A recent thread in the Flank Openings section has a lot of ideas/suggestions thrown into the pot over what could/should be included in the forthcoming Dangerous Weapons book for that section.
Thus, I thought we could continue this thread with some suggestions for both sides for the authors (Palliser/Emms/Wells)to mull over.
One idea I saw recently was at a Weekend Tourney up in Cumbria when a guy a couple of boards away from me played 1.e4 c5 2.Nc3 Nc6 3.f4 g6 4.Nf3 Bg7 5.a3!? Upon further investigation there's some analysis of this idea at EmbarrassedHTML0]http://www.kenilworthchessclub.org/kenilworthian/2008/05/left-hook-grand-prix-with-a3.html[HTML1] done by forum member urusov.
the basic premise is that if Black plays ...d6 then White goes into Bc4 lines but after the normal ...e6 White switches with the interesting 6.b4
This is not discussed in Gawain Jones new book on the Grand Prix and is certainly worth a second look.
                                                  Oscar.

Hello,

Anyone know any information yet about this book? According to Everyman, the book is due to be published around January 2009.
