It is equal. But it has very good surprise value..and it isnt explored..So you can easily remove your opponent from his book...And the better player win Smiley

3.d3 is the reversed version of 1.d4 d6 2.c4 e5. After 3.d3 Nf6 by analogy White may continue with 4.e5 Ng4 5.f4.

What do you 2. Na3' ers play against 2...d5!? I always though this move made a lot of sense. I never liked the looks of 3. ed Qd5 4. Nc4 e5!, and I've mostly played 3. exd5 Qxd5 4. Nb5!?, but never really got anything, and maybe I was even slightly worse.

I once played 3. d3!? there.

Doesn't this just lead to a slightly inferior KIA after 3...Nf6 4.Qe2 (4.ed5 Nd5 5.Nf3 Nc6 is slightly better for Black) 4...Nc6 5.Nf3 e5 6.g3 Be7 7.Bg2 0-0, when White has equality at best. Alternatively, 5...Bg4 is also possible, although then 6.h3 Bh5 7.g4 Bg6 8.e5 Nd7 9.Bg2 justifies White's play although the position is still balanced.

3.ed5 Qd5 4.Nf3!? with the intention of 4...e5 5.Bc4 looks like White's best chance. Instead 4...Bg4 5.Nb5 leads to interesting play and 4...Nc6 5.Bc4 Qd8 (5...Qh5 6.Nb5!) 6.0-0 Nf6 7.Re1 and while the position has to be objectively equal, I think White has slightly easier play.

I checked the position after 3...d5 with Firebird and interesting it also recommends 4.Nf3 and even claims White has a slight advantage. It would be foolish to blindly trust the computer this early in the game but it does mean 4.Nf3 deserves attention.

Hmmm...TonyRo your Nc4 move is okay I guess. I Have played this line in serious tournament  games and play Nb5 in that position so as to gain a tempo  due to Nc7+.  Then play d4 to open the position at some point.  THe great thing about this line, in my opinion, is that the game really just comes down to who is the better chess player.

Objectively the game is equal as soon as Na3 is played.

It can't be called 'junk', because white is not worse. It's just a line designed to cut out all theory pretty much, and not 'care' too much about getting a theoretical edge.

It combines ideas of Grand Prix (quick Bb5 often comes), c3 sicilian (c3 intending d4 is fairly common) and the closed (g3 & Bg2 is played against black setups which target e4 quickly). So for someone who doesn't want to play mainline sicilians, and has messed around with various anti sicilians, it's a useful option to have & use occasionally.

2. Na3 as well as the GPA do not give an advantage to white if black knows his stuff so I would consider both choices as equal (to each other) quality-wise..

I guess 2.Na3 requires less preparation to play it as white than the GPA..

Anyway, if you really want to try it, Chevalier points to the right direction.. Nigel Davies' 1.e4 for the attacking player is a good resource but as with other GM Davies material, fire up your engine for tactical holes..

Zvjaginsev - Khalifman Moscow ch-RUS (2) 2005
Shabalov - Homa Chicago 2006
Malakhov - Milov Villarobledo 2006
Devereaux - Snape Swansea 2006
and  search for Tkatchiev having the white pieces for the most important games that I know of in this variation

The GP does not work either if both sides don't make positional errors or tactical oversights.

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

Of course it is junk, what else can we say about such a move?

Ok, sometimes a GM can make something beautiful of a junkmove like 2.Na3 but for us mere humans don't even bother playing like this. The only wins you will have is against weak opposition who make positional errors or even quicker tactical onces.

So does 2.Na3 work if both players don't make positional errors or tactical oversights? I suppose it is enough for equal play but no more, you simply lose time with it and on c4 it can be kicked away by a b5 or d5.

Conclusion: Stick with your Grand Prix, this system is more worked out and the plans are clearer. f4-f5, sac, sac, mate...
Only if you feel you are in a very creative mood i would advise playing Na3 and even then you better know some plans and ideas.

surely it is not as threatening as the main lines such as c3 and closed

if the idea is to reroute to c4, then surely at this time c3 is a better square  and requires less tempo loss.

like 3f3 in the caro kann. good against those who have never seen it but not a line to play against a good player Sad

I dunno? There is more than likely a thousand and one people better qualified than me to answer your question.....that is, if you are one of those sort of players who lives for concrete variations to make ones world serene. I suppose a better question to ask is, do my oppnents think that 1.e4 c5 2.Na3 is junk? Better still, can they prove it...
If there is a book or an article on 1.e4 c5 2.Na3 by Grandmaster X, Y or Z and unless they can show it loses by force, you are only getting an opinion.....Whats that old adage?...Best by test.
Have a good one

2.Na3 is not utter rubbish, but objectively it is harmless. However, you should buy "1.e4 for the Creative Attacker", which tells you just about everything you need to know to play the variation as White.

Btw, your repetitive question "is it better than the Grand Prix" or "is the Grand Prix better" is becoming a bit of a cliche, at least on this forum.

Nothing has meaning or value other than the meaning and value that you give it.
