Itīs really simple; if you post really stupid things forum members are strong enough to tell you - quite often even in a really nice way!  Roll Eyes

So donīt hesitate to post, some of the true gems of this forum have been found by low-level members.

Just one thing: before opening a new thread browse through the old threads and check if the topic hasnīt been up a few months ago. If you have a follow-up, use the old thread if it is still on topic. And if you donīt know wether there is an old thread, ask MNb, he seems to remember everything in this forum.  Wink

This comes up every so often.  I believe that actually FIDE and USCF ratings are right in line with each other at about the 2200 level, with USCF ratings tending to be higher above and FIDE ratings higher below.  Last I was aware, the overall average difference was about 40-50 points, in the direction of USCF being higher.  A while back I posted some conversion formulas released some months ago by the USCF ratings committee (based on a study of 8000+ players rated under both systems).

According to a 2006 USCF survey:

"For FIDE rating [between 1800 and] 2200, the converted USCF rating is the same. For FIDE rating between 2200 and 2600, the converted USCF rating is FIDE + (FIDE-2200)/8. For FIDE ratings above 2600, the converted USCF rating is FIDE+50."
Also note, "Even though the formula prescribes that a 2200 FIDE player has a converted USCF rating of 2200, in reality the range of possible USCF ratings for FIDE=2200 can be as low as 1800 and as high as 2450."

This is from a post from the "Chess.com" forum.

My USCF rating is 2005.  The chesspublishing.com forum has players at all levels.  Take the advice given by previous posters maybe run Fritz or Rybka or whatever if it's appropriate and you should be fine.

Only now I see these posts.
My FIDE rating is currently 2108, lost a lot of points since gaining the FM title. Shocked
Dutch rating is 2136.
Normally its the other way in Holland, people used to have a higher FIDE than dutch rating, at least for years it used to be that way.

I had another player at a local tournament claim that USCF had changed a variable in their formula calculation, bringing the ratings more in line with FIDE.

USCF did change their formula, and is perhaps now more in line with FIDE  numbers, but it is still off, and I think always will be.  I submit that one reason is the USCF Ratings FLOOR (and lifetime title ratings) that keeps their ratings artificially inflated (to some degree).

For example: If an up and coming 1900 player beats a Floored 2200 Lifetime Master they gain more rating points than they would have had they adjusted the LifeMasters Rating to his new lower score (often as low as <2000 for some).

I know I've made some very poor decisions recently, but I can give you my complete assurance that my work will be back to normal. I've still got the greatest enthusiasm and confidence in the mission.

@MilenPetrov

What is an IECG rating? Is it an Internet rating or an e-mail chess rating?

IECG is a free correspondence organisation. They organise corr. chess tournaments by email and on the server. They also have own titles. Usual time control is 10 moves/40 days, but there are also rapid tournaments with Fischer time control 20 days per game + 2 days per move. I think it is a good alternative to ICCF, and most important it is free  Smiley

Also, it is worth noting that USCF ratings tend to be higher than FIDE ratings, usually by around 100 points, although in some cases the rating difference can be as high as 200.

I'm actually curious about that as it seems like USCF has gotten a lot closer to FIDE than I remember. I had another player at a local tournament claim that USCF had changed a variable in their formula calculation, bringing the ratings more in line with FIDE.

I'm currently rated above FIDE 2200, but lower than FIDE 2300. My ICC blitz is in the 2700-2800 range and my 5-minute ratings on ICC hover around 2400.

Also, it is worth noting that USCF ratings tend to be higher than FIDE ratings, usually by around 100 points, although in some cases the rating difference can be as high as 200.

Hey guys, I'm new here and I was just wondering how far out of my league I am compared to you guys (I'm around 1500-1600 uscf). If you would be so kind as to either make a rough estimate of the strength of the average poster here, or/and post your individual ratings I might be able to discern a trend and see what strength of player the average poster here is.

I am more asking this question out curiosity than anything else, but it would be nice to know how much I need to improve my game before I can start throwing out my advice to other posters here and be taken seriously. Thank you.

National rating: 1800-1900 (now at 1840)
I do not think youur elo is so important to decide whether or not to post.
If you have a question, just ask
If you think you 've found something interesting, just write it, the other participants may or may not improve it or htey will just pick it up for thir own practice.
This is not a forum where you should be afraid of the answers you will get. The guys here are fine, polite and most of them will try to help you improve your skills with good recommendations and examples.

Agree. Just make sure you put effort into answering any question you might ask first. People don't tend to respond well to a question posted primarily out of laziness (i.e. look at old threads, books you might own, internet or personal games databases first). Also, overly arrogant comments are normally not so good (Instead of "Obviously e4 is a horrible move, I can't believe you'd even consider it" try "I don't think e4 is the best move in this position because ...") Also welcome to the forum!

Oh, and I'm 1930 and assume I'm on the low end of the regular posters here.

I'm at ca. 2170 FIDE, maybe with a slight increase for the next list but you never know Smiley

I agree completely with thibdb13's comments; if you have a question or contribution, let's hear it!

Some general advice: One thing that annoys many members here is questions of the type "What's given on line x in book z", without the asker contributing any thought themselves. So try to minimize those. Also a good tip is to search for previous threads on an opening line, read them and consider continuing them, rather than start a new topic on the exact same line.

Yusupov once said that “The problem with the Dutch Defence is that later in many positions the best move would be ...f5-f7” but he is surely wrong.

USCF: 2249
FIDE: 2136 (I think, it is based on 1 or 2 tournaments)

2288 USCF, 2186 FIDE.

FIDE based on just 27 games.

My USCF rating is 2240; ICCF 2287.

There are a number of IMs who post here, which probably tends to skew the distribution of ratings here to the right.

USCF Standard: 1802 I'm guessing this is around the average for this forum.

My national rating is around 2160 (almost the same as FIDE ratings)
My current ICCF rating is 2267 (but from not too many games - about 30 and will raise soon)
My IECG rating is 2673 from about 380 games.

I think that it is almost impossible to cover everything here. Just concentrate to some areas and try to go deep inside.
