Big deal. After 1 e4 c5 2 a3 g6 3 b4 Bg7 4 Nc3 Nf6 5 Bb2 00 the position seems even to me.

I always thought 1.e4 c5 2.a3, intending 3.b4 in most lines, was the best form of the Wing Gambit, with White no worse than equal in all lines.  Some high-rated players have used it and a book was written on it a few years ago.

I've long had the impression that it's probably the most reasonable form of the Wing.

The Portsmouth Gambit 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.b4 
is a serious attempt to delay The Sicilian Wing Gambit but unlike The Wing Gambit white plays an early c3 and d4 like in the Evans gambit, if black take the pawn with the Knight.
Or if black plays c5xb4 then white plays d4 and takes the centre.
The thing is even Gary Kasparov (Rememer him) played this last October in a Simul ,and it does avoid 30 moves of theory.
