Regarding 8. Nd5, it just cites Miles-Vaganian for a few more moves and says +=.

On 8. Nc2 there is 8 ...0-0 9. Be2 d6 10. 0-0 Bd7 11. b4 (11. f3 +=) Qd8 12. Rb1 Rc8 13. f3 e6 14. Kh1 Ne5 15. Ne3 g5 (Cvitan-Christiansen 1990) 16. Be1 with the idea of Bf2, += according to Christiansen.

NCO likes 8. Nb3 better than ECO does; it gives your line (a) as += citing Hansen-Sokolov 1991, while ECO gives it (plus some further moves) as equal, citing Ljubojevic-Damljanovic 1991.

ok, i looked at 8.Nd5 and Nc2, they are quite interesting, can you give some further variations from ECO, especially to 8.Nd5
the model game miles-vaganian looked very comportable for white, but are has to be analyzed a lot of other possibilities instead of Vaganians 11...Nd7
i also find 11.Bc3 instead of the miles move 11.0-0 quite interesting

At a glance I'm not sure if some of ECO's distinctions make sense, but in line (a) it prefers 8. Nd5 and 8. Nc2 to 8. Nb3, and in line (b) it likes 6...d6 as well as 6...cd.

now i looked at both mainlines:

a) 6.Bd2 cxd4 7.Nxd4 Nc6 8.Nb3 Qd8 9.Le2 0-0 10.0-0 d6 11.Be3

b) 6.Bd3 cxd4 7.Nxd4 Nc6 8.Nb3 Qd8 9.0-0 0-0 10.Be3 d6

if i compare those positions to each other, i remark, that from the position at the end of variation b) white could transpose into the position from the end of variation a) if he plays 11.Be2
so it seems to me, that variation b) must be stronger or at least gives white more options, as he isn't forced to play 11.Be2 Tongue
also in variation b) i saw, that white has soem plans than 10.Be3, he can e.g. play with Bg5 or Re1, but i don't know how good these other options are

ECO (and apparently NCO) thinks 6. Bd2 is preferable.

Hi everybody,

do you know, what is the best way to counter 1.e4 c5 2.Sf3 g6 3.d4 Lg7 4.c4 Sf6 5.Sc3 and now not the standard cxd4 but 5...Qa5
I looked this up in database and saw, there two main moves: 6.Bd2 and Bd3, but i have really no idea, which one to choose
