the book by Plaskett is useful i think, it shows typical plans and games, i think the Fritz Trainer DVD on the trompowsky is useful too
and studying GM games also (I love Nigel Povah style) then you will be ready to play it and have lot of fun Cheesy

Besides Black can play 2...c6, 2...h6, probably 2...c5 and even 2...Nf6 transposing to a Tromp.

I just have to correct myself - 2...c5? is simply close to losing after 3.dc5 and you wont get back the pawn!  Smiley

3.dc5 Qa5 4.Nc3 e6 5.e4 de4 6.b4! +-

Well, black can play:

1. d4 d5 2. Bg5 c5 3. dxc5 Nf6!?

This is rarely played but white seems to have nothing better than
4. Nxf6  where after 4... gxf6! both 5. e3 and 5. e4 are playable but hardly any advantage.

There's 3...f6 with the idea of ...e5.  As far as I know 2...c5 has long been thought to be suboptimal, but is supposed to be += rather than close to losing.

A bit of Googling threw up Taimanov as Chepukaistis's opponent in that game.

There was an article in NIC a few years back about Genrik Chepukaitis; I think the article is called 'Smart chip from St Petersburg'. Anyway, guy was a modest standard player, but an incredible blitz player. He used to play offbeat openings like this.

One time, against a very strong old-school Soviet GM (forgot who: Polu? Taimanov? someone like that...) in a blitz tourney, Chepu plays 1 d4 d5, 2 Bg5. GM, blitzing on autopilot, plays 2...e6, and Chepu, without missing a beat, plays 3 Bxd8. GM gives Chepu a long, pained look, and says 'You should be serving beer, not playing chess'.  Grin

whenever I see this opening, I think of that story...

(can anyone fill in Black's name; thanks...)

The best solution was already mentioned by Glenn Snow! I fully agree with him...

Maybe I try this also, thanks. Can I buy archives of chesspub? Or when i get subscription I have only recent volumes?

With your subscription you get everything from the past a well. It's really worth the money. (Oh Tony - dont ask me now if I'm working for you  Grin - I don't!)

2...h6 3.Bh4 c6. literally gives equal if not better game to black. I play Tromp against Nf6 with great success. But must say against d4 d5, its just a wastage of white pieces. having said that, if you want to bypass the opening and play an equal or slightly worse positions with white, with the intent of outplaying the opponents, this is not bad choice.

Pasket's book is okay. But do not believe in the evaluation. Foxy videos are old and I won't recommend them as they over-sell the variations. Check Eric Prie's analysis. Though it will show black is doing good but you will get a much better understanding of the same.

Let us know how it works.

There's quite a lot of material on 2.Bg5 in the "d-pawn specials" section of Chesspublishing.com.  My guess is that this is the best source of information on it.  I counted 54 games annotated by either GM Summerscale or GM Prie with 2 ebooks ("Pseudo-Tromp 2...f6" and others, "Pseudo-Tromp with ...c6" where variations with and without ...h6 are covered.)

I found Gary Lane's Foxy video/dvd really useful - regardless of whether it's a good opening or not, opponents are not (in my limited experience) ready and it's great fun. I have played it twice OTB against booked up opponents in each case and have 2 wins out of 2.

The Plaskett book is typical of the author and you might want to check out the Checkpoint review before purchasing

Rizzitano devotes a chapter to this and recommends 2...h6 3.Bh4 c6.

I dont know the book, but I think the real question is: "Is this a good opening?"

I think this is the only opening where 2...f6 is a good move for Black - perhaps even more (eg. 3.Bh4 Nh6! looks good and 3.Bf4 may run into ...e5 sometime). Besides Black can play 2...c6, 2...h6, probably 2...c5 and even 2...Nf6 transposing to a Tromp.

It may have some surprise value - but just to play out of idea and not to study with White (I wouldnt  Smiley)

Well, I don't have a time to study d4 d5 main lines, that's why I'm interested in Trompowsky and Pseudo-Trompowsky.
Maybe Foxy have some DVD'S on it?
