At the risk of giving an overly broad generalisation,  it's probably like the difference between an Old Indian and a King's Indian - the former is regarded as playable but rather passive

Generally in Botvinnik English systems the bishop is developed on g7 rather than e7

I have been interested in d6/e5, e5/d6, f5, Nf6, Be7 systems of late. MNb pointed out to me that in the English, 1.c4 e5 2.Nc3 d6 3.g3 f5 4.Bg2 Nf6 5.d3 Be7 6.e4 then the Be7 becomes passive. Anyone have any experience in these type of positions that they would care to share?

(I have not found very much on the Botvinnik System in general on this site.)
