Yes I agree with Buecker. 5.Nf3 is also the move played by Leisebein here.

4.Nxe4 exd4 5.Nf3(!) is slightly better for White and not too boring, e.g. 5...Nc6 6.Bb5 or 5...Qe7 6.Bb5+ c6 7.0-0 cxb5 8.Re1 Be6 9.Bf4 with full compensation.

That's Sawyer's main line. Sorry, something like 4.Nxe4 exd4 5.Bb5+ c6 6.Bc4 Nf6 7.Ng5 Qe7+ 8.Qe2 Qxe2+ 9.Nxe2 Woll-Smith, corr 1971, Nd5 doesn't make me exactly drool. So I would like to see some serious analysis on 6.Qe2.

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

I agree that after 4.Nge2, the game may become very sterile quickly if Black wants and know how to do it. 4.Nxe4 is a lot more complex and the move to play for an umbalanced game.

Neither do I think White is worse after 3...e5. But sterile equality also causes headaches, don't you think? The problem the way I see it is this. After 3...e5 very quickly all the centre pawns are removed. Then quick development by both sides can lead to too many early exchanges, after which all the tension dissolves.

Hello MNb, I don't think 3..e5 is worse for White, I believe it's clearly ok for White, I used 4.Nge2!? but maybe 4.Nxe4 is ok too. The 4..c6 5.Fc4 exf3 is harder to play for White, same with the Euwe when Black plays it well, I agree.

Moreover I hope the book concentrates on the lines that really give White an headache, such as the Lviv Defence (3...e5), the Von Hennig-Milner Barry Gambit (4...c6 5.Bc4 exf3 6.Nxf3 Bf5) and the Euwe Defence (5...Nc6 6.Bg5 Be7 7.Bd3 Nc6).
The last thing I need is yet another book full of flashy mating attacks and weak defences.

My first impression is not too positive. No 3...e5, no 7...Nc6 in the Euwe Defence, a lot of irrelevant analysis in the Von Hennig-Milner Barry Gambit on ...Bxc2. At least the author is honest enough to show that "White's positions are not so good after ...Bg6"

How does the book differ from previous works on the BDG?

Most books on the BDG overrate White's chances in the critical lines or worse still disregard the critical lines entirely, so I hope this book is an improvement.

For those interested, one of my club's colleagues had released a book on the BDG: http://www.humbeekseschaakclub.goedgehost.be/overzicht.pdf
For orders, see 2nd page of the overview.

Yusupov once said that “The problem with the Dutch Defence is that later in many positions the best move would be ...f5-f7” but he is surely wrong.
