Giri is still young, so mistakes like this can be forgiven. Hopefully next time he will play the correct move, 1 e4, so that after 20+ moves of theory he can offer a draw.

Hmm... How did Giri manage this: http://www.chess.co.uk/twic/malcolmpein/giri-plays-short-in-amsterdam? Such an unthreatening and inoffensive opening...poor kid.

I suppose he isn't that talented after all.

I do not agree with you: this repertoire could really be very threatening and offensive against the one who's playing it.  Smiley
They said ferocious but not for whom, didn't they?

Yusupov once said that “The problem with the Dutch Defence is that later in many positions the best move would be ...f5-f7” but he is surely wrong.

Maybe there have been developments in this opening since that book came out. Anyone know if the mainlines of the veresov can lead to aggressive attacking positions?

The obvious place to look is Eric Prié's Veresov updates (and eBook) on the main site! Wink

It is based partly on the Veresov and goes on to other mainline openings depending on black's response.

I read Davies book and he seemed to give the impression that if black keeps the opening in a veresov after..1 d4 d5 2. Nc3 Nf6 3. Bg5 Nbd7/Bf5 then white get's equality and maybe black's c5 pawn break carries more weight then anything white has.  For the most part davies recommended playing with e3 or Qd3 and positions that arose certainly didn't warrant the word "Ferocious". Maybe there have been developments in this opening since that book came out. Anyone know if the mainlines of the veresov can lead to aggressive attacking positions?

Somehow, I think Kasparov's repertoire is a bit more ferocious.

'An Unorthodox Opening Repertoire' would have been more accurate, but understandably Everyman have a product to sell.

Also 4.Qd2 (or 4.Qd3) followed by quick queenside castling can be quite ferocious (but not necessarily very good).

Some of them via e4/f3 based gambits iirc. Whether those are objectively all that much good perhaps another matter. 3 .. c5 is lively of course, but its not really white attacking etc.

Its almost certainly just marketing though. Like titles cf Play 1 b4! Not that Play 1 b4!? or even ?! would be likely to sell as well.

Will presumably be getting a sound enough, low theory repitoire instead of a truly viscous one. The Veresov is well enough suited to that.
