"Marin's setup" is, however, a main book line of at least several decades' standing.  At one time it was even thought to lead to a clear advantage for White, in the wake of some games by people like Petrosian and Timman.

Well, for sure Kramnik's opening is not really impressive as far as opening theory is concerned. But to see his analysis and explanations -- see e.g. the chessvibes web page -- in fact is very impressive. I just enjoyed his show and I must say he is just brilliant at calculating lines and assessing positions. Of course, not absolutely perfect. But clearly dominating his opponent Erwin L'Ami. With Houdini's help I was able to indentify some mistakes on Kramnik's side but, well, mostly some tricky tactics happening as deep as 15 plies away from the actual board position or so.

Nevertheless, speaking about the Anti-Gruenfeld lines, I like Marin's setup (as given in the quality chess series book No. 4)
1. c4 Nf6 2. g3 g6 3. Bg2 d5 4. cxd5 Nxd5 5. Nc3 Nb6 (or 5... Nxc3 6. bxc3 Bg7 7. Nf3 O-O 8.
O-O c5 9. Rb1) 6. d3 Bg7 7. Be3
still more than Kramnik's experiment.

Good. Very nice of him to provide the equalizer also!  Wink

Anti-Gruenfeld Flank Openings

Wasn't sure where to post this, since there are a lot of different threads now with people mentioning the various different anti-Grunfeld flank opening move-orders. (Edit - I've moved it here since it really belongs in Flank Openings I suppose) Anyhow the nice win by Kramnik just now caught my eye where he used the seldom-played 5.d3!? with the idea of meeting ...Bg7 by 6.Bd2 I suppose?!. L'ami took on c3 and Kramnik went for the old h4 plan which ended up nicely after probably far too ambitious play by Black:

[Event "73rd Tata Steel GMA"]
[Site "Wijk aan Zee NED"]
[Date "2011.01.25"]
[Round "9"]
[White "Kramnik, V."]
[Black "L'Ami, E."]
[Result "1-0"]
[ECO "A15"]
[WhiteElo "2784"]
[BlackElo "2628"]
[PlyCount "45"]
[EventDate "2011.01.14"]

1. Nf3 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 d5 4. cxd5 Nxd5 5. d3 Nxc3 6. bxc3 Bg7 7. Qc2 O-O 8.
g3 c5 9. Bg2 Nc6 10. h4 Nb4 11. Qd2 Nd5 12. Bb2 Qa5 13. h5 Nb6 14. hxg6 hxg6
15. a4 Bd7 16. Kf1 Nxa4 17. Qg5 Qb6 18. Qh4 Rfe8 19. Bc1 e5 20. Qh7+ Kf8 21.
Bh6 Bxh6 22. Qxh6+ Ke7 23. Nxe5 1-0

Thinking about it from Blacks point of view, of course there are a million ways to play it, but following the old game Seirawan-Ilya Gurevich 1992 might not be the worst idea angling for a g3 reversed Dragon:

1. Nf3 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 d5 4. cxd5 Nxd5 5. d3 Bg7 6. Bd2 Nc6 7. g3 e5 8. Bg2
Nde7 etc.
