But four rounds after Adams-Tregubov, the game Chadaev (2580)-Safarli (2623) saw the improvement 8...draw agreed   Smiley

Be3 wasn't a focus of Finkel's article; he had various bits pertaining to it, sometimes leading to an edge for White and sometimes not.  One thing:  8. Be3 cxd4 9. Nxd4 Nc6 10. Nc3 Bg4 (as in Vachier Lagrave-Gwaze) was given by Finkel, and a decade earlier by ECO, as leading to equality, though they didn't mention 11. Qd3.  The sort of position reached a few moves later in the Vachier Lagrave game is one of the cases I came across which seemed very reminiscent of known stuff in the Tarrasch, except of course that White has a c-pawn instead of an e-pawn.

In a couple of games in 2012 by top 100 players, both Adams and Vachier Lagrave continued with 8. Be3, allowing or forcing cxd4 in reply. These were against Tregubov in the Turkish league and Gwaze in the Olympiad. White won both games.

Probably 4 ...Qxd5 should be a bit better for White. But the statistics after 4 ...ed is really under 50 % for White after 5. d4 Nf6. In the main line, 6. Bg2 Be7 7. 0-0 0-0, is there really anything slightly better for White? What were the lines given by Finkel?

Itīs a matter of taste. After 4.exd5 exd5 5.d4 White may get play against the IQP, but this is surely playable for Black.


5. Bg5 is mentioned by Gawain Jones, right? Black has several options against it. I usually prefer 5 ...Qc7, instead of the murky lines with ...f6. Can't be bad for Black really. Or else play 4. ...Nge7 or 4 ...d6.

Sure, the IQP position can't be worse for Black at all. The only line that looks interesting for White is maybe 5. Bg2 instead of 5. d4, after which White certainly isn't better, or what? That is why I wondered why Polgar didn't play this.

Black can actually also consider taking on d5 with the queen. It has been played by two Swedish GMs. I don't think it is better than ...exd5, but who am I to judge Ulf Andersson and Evgenij Agrest  Grin

The move order has the advantage of avoiding a whole host of systems by Black, one of the usual reasons for adopting an anti-Sicilian.

I've been playing it on and off for forty years myself. Against strong opposition, I usually end up getting a bad position later in the game without really appearing to do anything that suspect. The sequence 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 e6 3. d3 Nc6 4. g3 g6 5. Bg2 Bg7 6. O-O Nge7 7. Re1 d6 with e6-e5 to follow is well known and always seems to give Black a good game. In a move order with 3. g3 instead of 3. d3,  Black has to reckon with the positions created by an early d4 if he steers for that position.

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

3.g3 isnīt exactly new. For example it has been recommended for White a few years ago in the book "Dangerous Weapons: The Anti-Sicilian". I do like the move and have tried it a couple of times together with 3.d3 over the last few years with good results. I donīt think itīs better than 3.d3 - itīs just something different.

Using a Kings Indian Attack approach against the Sicilian with 2 .. e6 has been popular since the 1950s, game 1 of Fischer's 60 Memorable Games for instance. The starting move of 3 d3 is a bit suspect though, since you volunteer to block your light square Bishop in order to defend a pawn that isn't attacked. In the London Classic, Adams came up with 3 g3 against Polgar. The game continued 3 .. Nc6 4. Bg2 Nf6 5. Qe2 d5 6. exd5 Nxd5 7. 0-0 Be7 and the signature move 8. Rd1 . If now 8. .. 0-0, then 9.d4 with a likely continuation 9. .. cxd4 10. Nxd4 Nxd4 11. Rxd4 Bf6 12. Rd1 Qc7 . White can now be solid with 13. c3 or chase the Knight ( as Adams chose) with 13. c4 . Either way, White would seem to have a small edge. Longer term there's the 3-2 pawn majority on the queen side to leave endings unbalanced.
