I just noticed the review by Dennis Monokroussos, who seem to think the book is pretty ok, even though the general advice is to check the details...

What does he recommend vs the Rossolimo ?

Buying his next book.

A clever approach! Wink

That is probably the next book, right?
His c3 sicilian book was very useful, his GP book was poor. The French Advance books were one divided into two, but interesting and useful.
This looks like one divided into three. He is getting better at fractions, clearly.
He is opinionated, yes, but opinions are not always enough. Otherwise he would be min. 2750.

It's too bad 1.e4 c5 2.a4 isn't covered... I need something against 1.a4 and 1...c5 2.e4 would transpose. Cheesy

As well as omitting the sequence 1. e4 c5 2. a4, I don't think that 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. g3 is covered either. If Black plays 3. .. e6, there's a possible transposition to a game in the revent Carlsen-Anand match. But I suppose a book about .. e5 systems would play that instead.

Checking against the tree in
http://database.chessbase.com/js/apps/database/ shows it's rare but played.

I'll confess my book does not cover this move either. In my decade of playing competitive chess both otb and online, I've seen 2.a4 precisely zero times.

2.a4 is rare in practice, but plans to transpose moves and lure Black to unfamiliar territory. A decent reply would not necessarily require lots of analysis. It would be sufficient to explain how 2.a4 does not achieve the intended improvement upon Rossolimo lines, given that Black finds the right reaction. (I am not saying that such an antidote actually exists.) On second thought, maybe Sveshnikov plans to cover 2.a4 in the Rossolimo volume? Perhaps in a chapter "New Trends"?

Here is hoping that BPaulsen's coming work on 1.Nf3 covers 1...h6.

I was confused too  Grin. Maybe the idea with that line is to continue 4. a4?!

A plausible line is 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. g3. Presumably Black could reply with an e5 based system which could transpose to a Closed Sicilian if White plays Nc3. If White tries c3 instead, it's a Kings Indian Attack or reversed English. Neither are considered terribly good, but there's always the possibility of a serious improvement.

"The world-famous Sicilian expert tackles these annoying lines one by one. [...] 007 Foreword
013 1. The Opening as the Key to Everything
019 2. 1.e4 c5 2.a3; 2.Na3; 2.b4"

Apparently this world-famous expert has forgotten 2.a4.

This puts me in mind of a book by Sveshnikov that came out quite some years ago, "Sveshnikov on the Sicilian" or some such.  A rather slim volume covering 2. c3 and the Kalashnikov.  Not the best.  Wasn't long after I received it that I gave it to somebody ...

Thanks for that short review! I will take it off my "to-buy"-list I guess.
