why I like 1.e4 e5 and 1.d4 d5 for black.

I've come back to those lines.

There are many openings, each with its proponents. I can make a case for several openings. While they all have pros and cons, I'm (currently) back to 1.d4 d5 and 1.e4 e5.

In theory, these lines lead to a draw. That is why I favored the Sicilian and the King's Indian.

In practice, against the opponents I face, 1e4 e5 and 1d4 d5 lead to the earliest conflict and result - and it is seldom a draw.

(That said, I sometimes look back at the Sicilian, Winawer French, KID, Nimzo-Indian. It often seems as though my game would turn into a pillar of salt.)

Some time ago Leela played this way with the f1 or f8 bishop, making people think it was ok to tuck it away like nuclear waste: always forgotten, always dangerous, unassailable, costs 2-3 tempi to play in blitz but 0 neuron and 0 time, good tradeoff.

I guess I'm not too surprised to see that Jorden van Foreest has played it by transposition in Titled Tuesday.

1.d4 d5 2.h3 with the idea of Bc1-f4-h2. Kindle sample at amazon.

This probably belongs in the same category as Gunsberg's 1.e4 e5 2.a3. Not a great move, but also not completely pointless. For the record, openings like this are why I like 1.e4 e5 and 1.d4 d5 for black. White makes a soft move and I get an easy game, a second one and I have equality, after the third one I get to be white.
