A bit more on updates: I received an email from Chess Publishing today listing the latest updates: Flank Openings May 2026 (18 May 2026), Daring Defences: April 2026 (15 May 2026), and Dragons: March 2026 (13 May 2026). These are the top three entries in the "Latest Updates" section of the new site, reading left to right and then down. Going further, order of updates given in the changelog for the site

https://www.chesspublishing.com/changelog

appears to correspond to that shown in the "Latest Updates" area.

Apparently, that list of updates depends on the actual position on the board - if you click on the buttons above it sets up that position and shows relevant updates.

It works! Yes indeed, very neat. It took me directly to the critical article and game.

I was curious about the PDF (or PGN) eBooks. I found them. Perhaps my approach was round-about. Regardless, here are the steps:
1) My Account
2) Downloads
It is only two steps, but I discovered this after trying other approaches without success.

Apparently, that list of updates depends on the actual position on the board - if you click on the buttons above it sets up that position and shows relevant updates. So, the list of updates on the right is always changing depending what moves you make on the board and is not the latest at all.
It's actually rather neat and I didn't even know! Shocked

One other thing: a short list of new updates used to be displayed in the header section of the forum. However, that area has been blank since the launch of the new website. Perhaps updating the header is a lower priority item. At any rate, I found it useful since I check out the forum daily.  With the old setup, I would be able to see any updates that had been posted without having to go to the Chess Publishing site itself..

This relied on the RSS file, but this doesn't seem to exist for the new site, maybe it's outmoded?

Scrolling down, I see "Latest Updates". I think the order proceeds with the 1st row entry Dragons (March 26), then to the right Nimzo & Benoni (April 26), second row Daring Defenses and Open Games. (Another way to read this would be to go down from Dragons to Daring Defenses, etc.).
It looks like two orderings of updates, which I find confusing.
Should I rely on "Latest Updates" and read from left to right, row by row, to see which updates are the most recent?

I really don't know, and I find it confusing too! I've asked the developer.

FreeRepublic - I've also been wondering how to interpret the update information displayed on the new site. I think the list to the right of the board shows the updates in chronological order, with the most recent at the top. The "Latest Updates" section further down the page is less clear to me. At first, I thought the twelve items listed corresponded to the twelve sections on Chess Publishing. However, I then noticed that a couple sections (Daring Defences and Open Games) were duplicated, while Flank Openings and 1.e4 were not shown at all.

The new website is an ambitious project. It's a challenge to add functionality without losing old functionality. It looks great. Keep up the good work.

I try to keep up with updates as they occur. My ChessPub home screen shows updates (right of the chess board) as French (May 26), Open Games (May 26), Open Games (April 26).

I think we should have received an email asking us to change our passwords

Tony - In a bit of a coincidence, I noticed that very email in my inbox shortly after reading your post. Along with the login issue, it addressed my confusion about what happened to the position search feature. I'm glad to see that the message also indicated the team is open to suggestions. I'll have to give that some thought and see if I can come up with something constructive to propose.

One other item about the new site: I wasn't able to log in at first since my previous password didn't seem to work. With the old site I had always logged in with a username and password, and the new site asks for email and password. I tried without success to log in with both username and email, and ended up changing my password with the "Forgot Password?" link. It's no big deal, but I thought I'd mention it if the login process isn't working as intended.

Yeah, I had to do this too! Roll Eyes I think we should have received an email asking us to change our passwords, but it might have ended up in a spam folder. Some long-term subscribers' emails might also be out-of-date, but everything should work smoothly soon enough.

Position search is now integrated into the database page.

Tony - Thanks for the explanation. The position search on the database page works well and closely resembles the same function on the old site. I now seem to recall trying out that database page during the beta testing. Perhaps that's why I didn't have any concerns about doing position searches on the new site. I got confused when my Position Search bookmark landed on the new Check Your Games page.

One other item about the new site: I wasn't able to log in at first since my previous password didn't seem to work. With the old site I had always logged in with a username and password, and the new site asks for email and password. Looking forward to seeing the material that will aid us in using the new site more efficiently!

What was the problem?

My apology for the ambigous word "issue." I found an Issue (edition) of ChessPublishing (Nov 1st 2024 French Defense) that was of interest to me. All good.

I fwas able to search and I found an issue and a game of interest. I was able to play through the game, as before. Features have been added that are most welcome. I was able to do what-if analysis on the live board, request engine analysis, and download the PGN of the game in question. These are significant improvements IMO.

We are planning to roll out some material to help users get familiar with the database functionality - news items, videos etc.

The Check Your Games feature is not a replacement for position search, rather it's a completely new feature. Position search is now integrated into the database page. For Chess Publishing Updates, that is https://www.chesspublishing.com/database/chesspub. Similarly, for TWIC it is https://www.chesspublishing.com/database/twic. Links to the different databases are available from the dropdown Databases menu in the main navigation bar. On your first visit to the database page, you should be presented with a quick walkthrough of the features that can be reopened at any time via the Help icon (?).

There is a list of games bottom left of the database page, that can be filtered. The Position Search "Auto" toggle, when turned on, will update the list of games automatically as the position on the board changes. Or you can hit the "Search position" button in a specific position and keep the Auto toggle off to "pin" the search to a specific position.

Apart from the list of games, there is also a list of Updates that updates automatically with the position on the board. And the opening moves explorer is to the right of the screen.

On mobile devices, the layout is different, but the same functionality is available.
