Auto on keeps the game search up-to-date with the position as I adjust the position on the board. It's exactly what I want.

I've done it both ways. Sometimes I want the filter updated, sometimes not.

Why would I not?!

Because you are not trying to find the "best move", but are seeing how a bunch of games that met your filter criteria played out. Once you finish the first game, you will go to the next game. Except at some point, only the game being reviewed matches, and there is not any "next game" at all, never mind the one you wanted. Annoying.

tbh, the big thing for me is now having the 'auto' button clicked. It keeps up with the search changes.
Dunno how others work, but maybe an idea for that to be the default? Just a suggestion

I asked the developer and he feels that: Quote:
In general you don't want UI elements updating when you're navigating through a game, it's distracting when you're playing through a game and trying to focus on moves or annotations

What do others think? Undecided

Incidentally, we are currently working on an updated database UI that includes a welcome screen, sidebar, configurable panels and improved searching by position + opening guides can be played through in the browser. Smiley

That is lateness. Not impressed by late delivery and some sections can lag by 2 months. Poor.

Is it so bad? It looks to me like 11 out of the 12 July updates were published in July, while mid-August we will already have 7/12 August updates published today.

Thanks Tony. I am finding my way around better now.

Overall verdict - huge improvement. Good job.

One serious issue remains, but not of the website. That is lateness. Not impressed by late delivery and some sections can lag by 2 months. Poor.

there should still be an [Annotator] in the heading?

Yes, there is.

I suppose one question is "how do people use PGN files?" That would determine how many (or few) people are affected.

I enter PGN files in Chess Opening Wizard. It places the header information in the final position of the game. Comments appear in a window next to the chess board position.

There is probably no problem for people who use ChessBase. I don't know about other programs.

I have a solution that works for me. I open the PGN file with my word processor. I do a "search and replace all" changing { to {CP:  This works because comments are preceded by {. This modifies the comment to display "CP:  comment."

Every comment is preceded by a source: CP, MC (Modern Chess), CI (Chess Informant), or EO (Encyclopedia of the Openings). It helps me to keep track of who said what.

If anyone on your staff uses Chess Opening Wizard, they should be able to show you what I'm talking about. Otherwise, please disregard.

I think it would be an enhancement if there were some attribution for comments. At it's simplest, the comment could be preceded by "CP:  ". Or it could be more complex as in "CP, Aug 2026:  ". Or even something like "CP:  Emms Aug 26:  "

Maybe the [Source] is being stripped from the PGN files before the download, but there should still be an [Annotator] in the heading?

I'm very impressed with the New ChessPublishing website. I'm blown away.

Nonetheless, I have a suggestion about downloading PGN files.

The download works as expected. Moves and comments download without error. I think it would be an enhancement if there were some attribution for comments. At it's simplest, the comment could be preceded by "CP:  ". Or it could be more complex as in "CP, Aug 2026:  ". Or even something like "CP:  Emms Aug 26:  "

Give yourselves a little credit.

The Search function is not at all clear to me. Where searching? Which section? And it seems to revert to nothing afterwards. So I key in moves again. Ugh. Harrumph.

I just want to key in moves to get the relevant updates for that position and the games. Simple?

If you're on a computer (on the https://www.chesspublishing.com/database/chesspub page) there is a tour that opens on the first visit, that can be reopened at any time with the ? icon. Again, on a computer you can key in the moves and then press the 'Search Position' button underneath the board which should give you lots of results.

Back home and have re-downloaded the pgn updates for Daring Defences and 1.d4 d5 and both now contain the full annotations. Just compared them to the updates I previously downloaded and the original downloads didn't contain the full annotations as I mentioned for some reason. Anyway, appears to be fixed, or I did something wrong.

Is it possible you weren't logged in on the other computer? Anyway, this certainly shouldn't happen, so if it does happen again please email support.
