Also regarding Simon Williams book, he played lines that he recommend in the last British Championship. Even though opponents were seen buying his book, and going off to prepare the night before. In most cases got the worse position, but game dynamic enough to keep alive, and sometimes to win.

After rereading, I notice that I am somewhat harsh on Williams' book. I have learned two useful things from his book:
1. Black should consider Ne4 in several positions, especially when White plays b3 before developing his queen's knight.
2. Black should keep the option open to play Bc5 or Bb4 when White plays a setup with c4, d3 and e4.

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

I own the Williams book and have seen the Pinsky book. Still I cannot do without Schwarz' Holländisch from 1964 and Tajmanov's Damengambit bis Holländisch from 1980. This says enough, I think.
In fact, these two old books combined with a decent database could very well do. Too many important lines are missing in the recent books. Inn2 already pointed out 1.d4 f5 2.c4 Nf6 3.Nc3 e6 4.f3!? I will add 1.d4 f5 2.g3 Nf6 3.Bg2 e6 4.Nf3 Be7 5.o-o o-o 6.c4 d6 7.Nc3 Qe8 8.Re1 Qg6 9.Qb3!?
Further especially Williams underestimates the Nh3 lines, recommends a line for Black after 1.d4 f5 2.c4 e6 3.g3 Nf6 4.Bg2 Bb4+ 5.Nbd2 which is absolutely unreliable - he recently lost himself with it.
I found Williams' book, with all those enthusiastic reviews, simply disappointing because of superficiality. For instance: on page 43 Williams writes "I believe that the chances are about equal." Under the diagrammed position on the next page we can read that White is slightly better. In reality I think Black has severe problems.
The big problem with English chess books, is that they usually ignore sources in other languages. The Iljin-Zjenevsky is a perfect example - which is even true for Bellin's book.
The best book on the Iljin-Zjenevsky? The golden oldie by Schwarz, I am afraid .....
As far as I know, there is no book on the IZ against White non-fianchetto systems; only Tajmanov briefly mentions 1.d4 f5 2.c4 Nf6 3.Nc3 e6 4.e3 Be7 for instance.
Another good idea is to look on the website of Keith Hayward, a specialist on the IZ for many years now.
Can I find that Jon Rogers review somewhere on internet?

I have the Williams book (by Gambit). It's enough to get you up to speed but as you read thourgh the book many nagging questions will undoubtedly arise but are unfortunately not answerd. This is one of those thought-provoking gems that leaves you with more questions than answers. But it is an inspiring work. I also thought Williams explained the pawn structures and the kingside attacks very well.

Pinski strikes me as more complete but significantly less on explanation when I browsed through it.

I suggest your first step is to get the Williams. If you decide that the classical dutch is a weapon you like to use, then get the Pinski later.

Thanks for this!  I'll definitely give the Simon Williams book a look.

I agree with the above poster: Simon's book, while slight, isn't half bad in my opinion. Jon Rogers did a very good review of it in Kingpin 37, with many useful and interesting suggestions. Pinski's is much worse. The best - if you can get it - is Bellin's, even though it is 20 odd years old (it was redone in the early 90's, and I don't know about that edition).

I actually think Simon Williams Play The Classical Dutch is terrific; not thorough, but an excellent beginner's book, which really explains what you should be striving for when you play. It is published by Gambit. The other book I use is called The Classical Dutch and is by Jan Pinski (published by Everyman). I think using these two books together will be enough to see you through.

In my situation, days are like women - each one's so damn precious, but they all end up leaving you.

Book on the Ilyin-Zhenevsky?

I've done a quick scan of old posts and can't for the life of me find any recommendations for books on this line of the Dutch Defense.  I also seem to remember reading somewhere that forum members were unenthused by Simon Williams's book on the Classical Dutch (can't find that either  Angry).  Can anyone tell me what the best book is on the Ilyin-Zhenevsky?  I've seen plenty of Leningrad literature, but would like to find an alternative...

Thanks in advance   Smiley
