Congratulations, Jack, the whisky did not prevent you from taking your first chance.
If you don't mind to meet the French and Pirc, you might be interested in 1.d4 f5 2.Nc3 d5 (Nf6 is another option; it might transpose after 3.Bg5 d5 4.f3 and evt 5.e4) 3.e4 dxe4 (fxe4 4.Qh5+ will make you happy) 4.Bg5 (not in Williams' book on the Dutch). I have started a thread in the d-pawns special section on this and hope to attract the attention of some experienced Blackmar-Diemer Gambiteers.

As I don't like the Stonewall, I propose 1.d4 e6 2.c4 f5 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Nf3 Be7 5.h3 o-o 6.g4 Ne4 7.Qc2 Nxc3 8.Qxc3 a5 9.a3 d6 (Bb4 is a not so obvious blunder) 10.gxf5 Rxf5 11.e4 Rf7 12.Bd2 Nc6 13.o-o-o e5 14.dxe5 Qf8 15.Be2 dxe5 16.Nxe5 Bf6 17.f4 Qe8 and 18...Nxe5 with equality - maybe Black even has a tiny edge.

yeah I know that there are no g4-gambits (but who knows, perhaps 2. g4 without gambit^^)
Actually, after 1. d4 e6 there is the opportunity to make a trip to france with 2. e4
and after 1. d4 d6 2. e4 is also possible to play against pirc.  Tongue
perhaps I can survive these games without g4  Wink

Thanks for the warning. I have never stated, that the e6-Dutch is a safe opening, not even against players from equal strength. Instead of Gundersen's 9...Bb4 I propose 9...d5.

Here's a couple of other similar examples, showing mainly that the 1...e6 dutch isn't all that safe if you play a stronger player, at least when that player has a creative & aggressive style of play...

Jack,
I can wholehearedly recommend this line for white. However, 3.e4 d5 is good for black (although there are numerous improvements on the Callinan-Saidy game given by Knut. Either 3.Qd3 or 3.h3 are the ways to play this line as white. It seems to be recommended that after 3.h3, black give the pawn back with 3...g3 4.fxg3, which gives black a comfortable game according to "theory". In my mind, and from my experience, this is total nonsense. One game continued 4...Nf6 5.Bg2 d5 6.Nc3 e6 7.e4! c5 (Junior 9's recommendation, apparently) 8.cxd5 cxd4 9.Qxd4 Nc6 10.Qf2! with a clear advantage to white. I have no doubt that there are improvements in black's play, but 3...g3 gives white a decent game in my opinion. (Although I've had several arguments with people here a long, long time ago about this.)

3.Qd3 (or 2.Qd3 d5 3.g4!?) is the alternative, and probably more popular, line. The simple point is that white intends h3 when ...g3 is no longer a threat (since the queen can recapture). Of course, the queen also supports e4 and threatens Qb5+ in some lines. The most common continuation (from our 2.g4 move order) is 3...d5 (3...Nc6 chould be given serious attention and may be critical) 4.h3 Nf6 5.hxg4 Bg4 6.Bh3!? with compensation. However, 6.f3!? Bh5 7.e4!? deserves more attention - after 7...Nc6 8.e5 Bg6 9.Qe3 Nd7 10.Nh3!? Bxc2 11.Nf4 Bf5 12.Bd3!? I was better in a series of training games with a friend (15 minutes for all moves). One game went :

1. d4 f5 2. g4 fxg4 3. Qd3 Nf6 4. h3 d5 5. hxg4 Bxg4 6. f3 Bh5 7. e4 Nc6 8. e5 Bg6 9. Qe3 Nd7 10. Nh3 Bxc2 11. Nf4 Bf5 12. Bd3 e6 13. Ng6 Bxd3 14. Qxd3 Nb4 15. Qd2 c5 16. Nxh8 Rc8 17. Na3 cxd4 18. f4 Nxa2 19. Rxa2 Bb4 20. Qxb4 Rxc1+ 21. Ke2 Rxh1 22. Nb5 Rh2+ 23. Kf3 g5 24. Nd6+ Kf8 25. Kg3 gxf4+ 26. Kxh2 Qh4+ 27. Kg1 Qg3+ 28. Kf1 and white soon won, although black may well have enough for a draw here.

I'm sure both sides have improvements, but hopefully this game serves as an illustration of white's chances in this sort of gambit line - I feel there is more than enough compensation in the lines after Qd3, but my personal preference is the first line.

McDonald recommends black plays 3. ...d5 as in this game
http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1380975

But by all means, give it a go if you feel frisky - particularly in blitz, black may not find this plan

Dutch 1. d4 f5 2. g4!?

Hi,

I'm planning to play 1. d4 (I used to play 1. e4 but I want sth new). The main problem now is to find a good variation against the Dutch, not as sharp as the Staunton (1. d4 f5 2. e4) but not one of the main lines.

So I thought about this unusual move and found it an interesting way to build a strong pawn center (after 2. ... fg4: 3. e4) or , if black declines the pawn, to disturb or even destroy blacks attack on the kingside (after eg 2. ... g6 3. g5 !?).

What do you mean? Are there any refutations or just games and ideas you can post?

thanks for your recommendations

Jacky
