He spoiled a nice job for him and his wife in Linares. Pity about chess players not being able to support themselves, but I believe they could certainly do well if choosing the right options...

Here I have found something:

http://www.zoominfo.com/people/Salov_Valery_180010734.aspx

I haven't been able to conclude if Salov is antisemite indeed or just criticizes Israel's policy.

The site is down since a few years:

http://schaak.startpagina.nl/

scroll down and click Valery Salov.

I thought Salov went mad and got into anti-semitic politics. At one time he had a website which I'm told was quite entertaining if derangement amuses you, though I've never visited it.

It has been known for decades that in ICCF corr. chess on the highest level analyst teams have aided Soviet-players and also a few others. I have never found a regulation that forbade consulting anyone.

Oosterom is Nr 1 of the corr chess players - I dont know if you have to play yourself in corr chess or not (if not, nobody would be allowed to use a comp as well - therefore I think it's possible).

have a look at: http://www.iccf-webchess.com/RatingList.aspx

Thanks for the info. I googled van Oosterom, who I had never heard of,

I am sure you have heard of the annual Melody Amber tournament of Monaco. Possibly you also have heard of the ten Dance tournaments (golden oldies vs. young females) of the 90's. Van Oosterom sponsored them from his own pocket.

Thanks for the info. I googled van Oosterom, who I had never heard of, and found this interesting comment:
"Chess author Tim Krabbé wrote: "The Turk was operated by William Schlumberger, Mephisto was operated by Isidore Gunsberg, Ajeeb was operated by Harry Pillsbury and Joop van Oosterom is operated by Jeroen Piket.""
Apparently Piket's still into chess at least, but does anyone have a clue on what Salov might be doing with his life?

Piket is in service of Joop van Oosterom (the chess maecenas) these days. That provided him of an sounder base to support his family (his own words). Van Oosterom has become WCh corr chess since then and I don't believe in coincidences like that.

But I am curious what Valery Salov has been doing last years.

Piket withdrew from professional chess in 2002, and Salov has a very few games from 1999 onwards.

Since my return to chess I don't follow the happenings of the elite chess players that closely but two players who I admired a lot in the past obviously aren't playing anymore. Does anyone know what happened to Jeroen Piket and Valery Salov? They just got bored of the game or what?
