For some reason, I thought that 1.e4 Nc6 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 f5 was the Colorado defence.  Guess not.  Does anyone know if this has a different name? I think a guy at my club plays this way.  Since I live in Colorado, I am scared to face his opening, for fear that he has spent his life studying it and has many tricks/traps up his sleeve!  Maybe someone could dispel these irrational and fearful ideas from my head with a simple antidote? (My solution is 1.d4 so far)  Anyway, sometimes I get the feeling the only thing played around here vs. 1.e4 is 1...Nc6 or 1...d5 2.ed5 Nf6.  Sheesh.

After 2...Nf6 3 e5 Nd5, does White have better than 4 d4 d6? If he doesn't then you could do worse than this (I'm sure for example that 2...f5 is objectively worse than this!). It actually transposes to a variation of the Alekhine. There was an lengthy and truly excellent article on it in Kaissiber a few years ago. I am sure a search of their website will turn it up.

I used to play Nimzo in every game, but switched to sicilian some years ago. However, in blitz, I still play Nimzo AND the colorado gambit.

This isn't quite as bad as everyone is making it out to be, although I definitely agree that 4.Bb5! is best and favors White.  I would give more analysis, but you're also right that this is the wrong section.

On the note in the albin topic, this doesn't strike me as a daring d4 defence so much as a suicidal e4 one... maybe this should be moved to the 1. e4 subforum?

I recently had a game with this line and can attest to how terrible it is. I offer the following basic line which gives white a healthy plus, I might post decent analysis if i can be bothered and people are actuallly interested

1.e4 Nc6 2.Nf3 f5? 3.exf5 d5 4.Bb5! rather than the overly complicated Nh4 this recommendation of Sadlers should put the Colorado to rest 4. ... Bxf5 5.Ne5 Qd6 6.d4 Nf6 7.Nc3 with Bf4 to follow.

Perhaps Black can play slightly more accurately but still you only have to take a quick glance at the position after Ne5 to realise that Black is at best positionally bust.
