Well I just have to say I really love the Dragon forum better than the KID. I play both. I have just recently added the "real dragon" to my rep. I have been known as a fierce defender (attacker) of the Acc Dragon. I like the fact that now people have a harder time preparing for me. I find the 9.0-0-0 the most difficult to deal with. Chris suggests in his book perhaps 9…Bd7?  I find it a bit slow for Black. I will be trying 9…Nxd4 next time out and will let you know how it goes!
Regards,
-SW

I'm gonna kind of turn this into a board for new lines after the stated continuation and not just David's line. The two lines that I feel are the most cause for concern are 13. h5 Qa5 14. h6 and 13. g4 Qa5 14. a3 Rab8 15. h5 b5 16. h6 With regards to the second line, has anyone had any good practical experience or have analysis on either 16...Bh8 or 16...b4 17. Nd5 (from here, I found Frick-Buss, 2002 went 17...Bxd5 18. hxg7 Qa4 19. exd5? bxa3 20. c4 Rxb2+ 21. Bxb2 Rb8 and  Black won shortly). I haven't found any quality games with 16...Bh8. After 14. h6, 14...Bh8 15. a3 Nd7 16. Bxh8 is a troublesome endgame for black and after 15. a3 on chesslive.de (Chessbase's free online database), White has won or drawn all games since 1996!! Instead, I am trying to look at 14...Rxc3!? which has only been played once (according, again, to chesslive.de) in a Psakhis-Yurtaev USSR Ch game in 1980! (Yurtaev won a 2 pawns for the exchange endgame). You can access that game online at http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1151249 ;

If anyone has any ideas/games/analysis on the above I would greatly appreciate their input as these lines are quite critical.

Thanks

Forgot to answer your first question Eddie!

Megapage was a site I found a while back that contained loads of opening analysis, diagrams and supposed novelties. For some reason proper access to the site got bolced with a login screen so I guess that is the end of that!

Yes indeed Eddie!
I don't actually remember showing you the Qa5 line but I do remember playing you in a Scotsman schools match many moons ago when you were playing for Perth (I think) and I was playing for St Ninians High (I think - getting old now, well, 26!). I believe the game ended in a draw (although knowing my playing skills I was probably slightly worse...!).
Anyway(!), I'm glad you remember me! I see you are doing well now (academically and chess wise). That's great.

As for me, hmm, I'm doing fine. Chess wise, my rating peaked at 1970 (Scottish) last season but I never get the time to improve anymore (if I am capable...!). I've had a couple of IM scalps in my time but I've never really played as often as I could have. The last tournament I entered was the Glasgow Congress last November and after drawing my opening game with a decent Spanish player (well, about 2100) I headed up to the local Union to meet my girlfriend and her friends. We had a good night. So good in fact, that I had to withdraw from the tournament the next morning due to a monster hangover!! Ah well, there's always this year!

Academically I left Uni with an ordinary degree (didn't bother to do Honours) and am now working in Glasgow.

Maybe see you again some day.

All the best.

David

Firstly, what is megapage?

Secondly, is this the David Campbell from Scotland that first showed me the Qa5 Dragon at the Glasgow Congress when I was 13?

Thanks David -- seems those teasers running Megapage need to sort themselves out!

Hi Michael.

When I said I discovered that idea "a while back" this is because I to have since been unable to access the megapage!! (I encounter the same problem!).

If anybody knows an alternative route into the theory page or indeed can add more to the dragon topic I started that would be appreciated!

Regards

Dear David

I just wanted to ask you how you use Chess Megapage these days! When I try to access any of the articles on that site it seems to ask me for a login, but I've no idea how to get a login! -- can you help?

Many thanks,
Michael Ayton

Having played the dragon for some years now I have constantly (like everyone else) tried to discover new ideas to try and "stay afloat"

I came across some analysis a while back and had a look and it appears that some new ideas can be tried for black in one of the main lines.

Starting with the standard 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 g6 6.Be3 Bg7 7.f3 Nc6 8.Qd2 O-O 9. O-O-O Nxd4 10.Bxd4 Be6 11.Kb1 Qc7 12.h4 Rfc8 13.h5 Qa5 14.hxg6 hxg6 15.a3 a6!? (I found this idea on Chess Megapage) 16.Bd3 Rab8 17.g4 b5 18.Qg5 (here white assumes that play will continue with 18...Qc7 19.e5 dxe5 20.Bxe5 which has all been seen before but...) 18...Rc5!!? (an exchange sacrafice to keep the attacking momentum going) 19.Bxc5 dxc5 20.Qxc5 Nd7 21.Qb4 (21.Qxd7 grabs another pawn but black can play 21...b4 and looks to have a dangerous initiative...) 21...Qc7 22.Nd5 (natural simplification by white due to the material advantage) 22...Bxd5 23.exd5 a5 White has to chose carefully where to place the Queen.

A 24.Qe1 (stopping ...Qe5) 24...b4 25.a4 Qb6 (with the ideas of ...Qd4 or ...Qf6 setting up a battery on b2) it looks like black could have good compensation for the material defecit (and in any case, all dragon players don't really think about their own material - just the white king!)

B 24.Qd2 (maintaining the option of the defensive Qc1) 24...Nc5. Black has the immediate ideas of 25...b4, 25...Qe5,25...Na4 and maybe even a sacrafice on b2.

I do not have Fritz to analyse this but materially white is three points up and I wonder if black has enough...? Undecided
