Compare 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.b4 cxb4 with 1.e4 c5 2.b4 cxb4 3.d4 d6 and isn't it nice to
have the possibility of f2-f4 with a big centre?
Rolf Schwarz in his 1983 book gives 1.e4 c5 2.b4 cxb4 3.d4 d5 4.e5 (after 4.exd5 Nf6!
5.axb4 Qxd5! is strong in Scandinavian style) Nc6 5.a3 Qc7 Yates-Buerger, London 1926.
So White's best chance might be 3.a3 after all, as d5 4.exd5 Qxd5 (Nf6 5.axb4 Nxd5
6.d4!?) 5.Nf3 and the theoretical refutation e5 is not so clear after 6.Bb2 Nc6 7.c4.

When I saw Shirazi at a tournament in France I aske dhim about his 5 move loss at the USA CHampionships. He pondered for a moment before declaring it was one of the reasons he left the country!

     I have played the deferred wing gambit on and off for many years. Am currently around 2100 and find it works well.

     First point is that it can be played against 2...e6 and 2....Nc6

1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.B4 Nxb4 4.c3 Nc6 5.d4

  A mistake many people make when playing the wing gambit is to worry about being a pawn down. Just forget about it and dont try for to much.

  Its best to just start quietly with Nf3 Be2 O-0 etc.
The beauty of the wing gambit is black will likely as not try and play a normal sicilian but will be denied his normal pressure on the queenside, meanwhile white will slowly build up a kingside initiative while black will not have his usual counterplay.

  I normally delay a3 as there seems little rush, but basically dont worry to much about being a pawn down, that is the key to playing gambits well

Nice to see Craig showing a few wins of one of the many lines which I would love to play in a match but haven't had the nerve to play. Although the Wing Gambit is perhaps a bit dodgy, it has been played by Marshall, Keres and Capablanca, and they weren't bad players, were they.

I do think that the Gambit deferred is the best try 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. b4, because after 3...ba 4.a3 It loses a tempo to play 4...d5. However, as Craig said it means you have tp prepare lines against 2...Nc6 and 2...e6 etc

On a final note, how about 1. e4 c5 2. b4 cb 3. d4 d5 4. e5 Bf5 5. a3 and White seems to have some Benko-style compensation along the a and b files

The deferred is fine after 2...d6, but 2...g6 or 2...Nc6 would kinda ruin the whole 3. b4 thing. Best to throw the pawn in at white's earliest convenience. 

I know that there've been quite a lot of laughs at the Shirazi - Peters game alluded to earlier where Shirazi loses his rook in 5 moves. To settle the score here are a few white wins:

After 8...a5 9.bxa5 Nc6 10.Bb5 looks good, seems to stay a pawn up. In general the activity comes from the bishop pair and a lead in development. Blacks queenside is quite weak, the a-file is obvious, but there are also ideas of f4 and Bg2, b5, and Nc3-b5 or d5. I know that white's pawn structure on the kingside looks terrible, but it really isn't that bad. The pawns are difficult to attack, and with the queens off it isn't as important to find a shelter for the king. Also normally doubled pawns are worse if you have them on the side of your majority. For defending against a majority it doesn't make much difference if thery're doubled or not.

Whoops! Sorry Ben, I should have known not to try and analyse that position blindfold in the local library! You're right - perhaps 7...Qxf3 8. gxf3 must be best for Black then. I am not sure where the activity for White is coming from though - is it through the a-file. After 8...a5 9. ba Nc6 what is White going to do in order to have a half decent position.

No, because after 7...Qe5+ 8.Kd1 Qxa1 there is 9.Qxb7 threatening Qc8 mate and white gets the rook back with a good position.

1.e4 c5 2. b4 ab 3. a3 d5 4. ed Qxd5 5. Nf3 Bg4 isn't so bad for white. After 6.axb4 Bxf3 7.Qxf3 gxf3 white gets a horrible pawn structure, but a reasonable amount of activity and the bishop pair. I'd say the position is unclear.

After 1. e4 c5 2. b4 cb, then 3. d4 seems the correct move, followed by 3...d5 4. e5. Black has the option of going into a french wing gambit if he likes too... dont make any claims to being sound, but at U-2000 level, you think this is worth a shot?

White doesn't have to faal for a trap losing his rook, and even if he doesn't, the move is still bad. What about 1.e4 c5 2. b4 ab 3. a3 d5 4. ed Qxd5 4. Nf3 (recommended by NCO) 4...Bg4 and White's position is a mess.

Maybe the best try for White is 1. e4 c5 2. b4 ab 3. Bb2!?

I don't think the Wing Gambit is too good.  Maybe the dffered is better.
