One idea is to look about winboard/UCI-engines and you find them at URL http://perso.wanadoo.fr/lefouduroi/computerchess.htm ; (in french). Another idea is to look for common and free programs (Crafty, Rebel,...) and I advice you to look at http://www.enpassant.dk (click english flag and then CHessprograms)

I am almost sure you could find a free download of Fritz 5 or Fritz 6. If not, just go buy Fritz 8. I have Fritz 7 but 8 sounds like it is a lot better.

There is WinBoard but I am not sure if it fits your requirements completely. Nevertheless, it's free, you can play against it, use it to connect to chess servers, etc.

Here is the link: http://www.tim-mann.org/xboard.html

Free Chess Program for Windows ?

I search for a free chess programm for windows. For Macintosh there are the free to download and masterstrength having programs "Sigma Chess" and "MacChess" both rated 2500 somewhat on actual MACs, with some features, opening book and the usual stuff like editing matefinding, thousands of settings. Like the big ones, just a bit weaker but for free and quite good.

But where the hell is a free program with that abilitys for windows ? Allover the web, there seem to be engines and boards and lots of stuff, but not just a simple program like the two mentioned above. Am i wrong ? Or is every today's program just available as engine for fritz or something?

Undecided
