Well, of course this is a well-known line - in his book French Winawer, chesspublishing.com 's own Neil McDonald refers to it as the 'Winawer Declined', while Steffen Pedersen in Main Line French calls it the 'Armenian Variation', I think (because it has been played with Black by Vaganian and Lputian).

It used to be taken for granted that 6.b4 was the principal White try for an advantage here, but I seem to remember a game a couple of years back where Kasparov played 6.Bd2 Nc6 7.Qg4!? (against Khalifman I think).  Pedersen covers this line briefly.

Of course…but I think playing Ba5 first then cd4 would be more interesting…1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Bb4 4.e5 c5 5.a3 Ba5 6.b4 cd4

MCO-14 has 7.Nf3! cxb2?? 8.Bxb2 Ne7 9.Bd3 b6 10.O-O Bb7 11.Nd4 a6 12.Qh5 as better for white, J. Kristiansen-C. Hansen, Reykjavic 1981.
