Nothing at all alumbrado  Smiley ... I just feel comftable playing the white position 6.Nf3 e4 7.Nfd2 (Ne5 was played by Adams v Gelfand)  ... I think 5.Qc1 instead of b3 is the most popular move ... I try to be positive and look at it as a French with the bishop on the outside  Smiley

I was under the impression that Black had an effective equaliser here in the shape of 2...h6 3.Bh4 c6 4.e3 Qb6 5.b3 e5! with the idea 6.dxe5?? Qb4+ and 7...Qxh4

Anything wrong with that?

I like one of Craig's suggestions 2...c6 intending Qb6/Bf5/e6.  Perhaps whites best is 3.c4 but then 3...Qb6 4.Nc3 (otherwise just 4...Bf5 5...e6) 4...Qb2 looks sound.

Hi,
    I am always playing this line (my son also) but when facing it normally at blitz I always find myself playing 2...f6 followed by 3...Bf5 ... As  white I don't really mind what black plays, here's my last serious game as white against my good friend GA Reid 177bcf (elo?)

My new grade is 1877, somehow... I've also ended up being county captain this year, that should be fun. If you want to keep in touch then you can drop me a line from my website (address is on the 1.e4 ... forum under the alekhine new book thread) and we can take it from there. You plan to play for any teams in East Glam? I'm not sure what the zonal rules are, but I may well try to find out if you're still eligible for WW County games, if you're interested.

A quick on-topic note, in the line 1.d4 d5 2.Bg5 Qd6 3.Nc3 c6 4.Nf3 Bf5 5.e3 Nd7 6.Nh4 e6 7.Bf4, 7...Qe7 is probably more accurate. 8.Nxf5 exf5 and black can follow up with ...Qe6, ...Ngf6-e4 with a clamp on the light squares in a closed position where the two bishops shouldn't be strong.

Geof, I noticed this after I first posted the thread. I know that there is also a discussion on it elsewhere in the forum. Unfortunately I am not yet a subscriber due to trying to save up money to get theough my postgrad course. Hopefully soon i will be: what i saw from my guest status on the line looks good.

Craig, I am always open to suggestions from your good self! I'll have a look at them; you probably won't get the chance to play any of this against me as I'll be in Cardiff next year. Best of luck for the new season: what is your new grade BTW?

      I don't know if you are a subscriber, But GM Eric Prie has discussed the Pseudo-Tromp (1.d4 d5 2.Bg5!?) at some length in his April and May 2004 updates in the d-pawn Specials section, and examines a critical line for Black in some detail and with a good deal of original analysis.  Definitely worth checking out if you have access.

Just a few thoughts (and Peter, you know coming from me you're gonna hate them  Tongue), but how about:

2...Qd6 to solve black's problems - 3.Nc3 c6 4.Nf3 Bf5 5.e3 Nd7 6.Nh4 e6 7.Bf4 Qb4 looks okay for black to me, and dull enough to inspire any QG player.

Perhaps 2...c6 is fine, just looking to play ...Qb6, then ...Bf5, ...e6, ...Be7 and black seems to have no problems.

Also, maybe 2...c5 is worth a look - how good is 2...Bg4 against the QG? Then 3.dxc5 f6 4.Bh4 e5 5.e4 d4!? (rarely played, the imho inferior 5...dxe4 6.Qxd8+ Kxd8 7.Nc3 Bxc5 is more common, which leads to a large white advantage after 8.O-O-O+ Nd7 9.Nxe4 Be7 10.f4!; maybe worth looking at is 5...Bxc5 6.exd5 Qb6!?, which looks quite good to me) 6.Bc4 Bxc5 7.Ne2 Qb6! 8.Nd2 Be6 9.Bxe6 Qxe6 looks fine to me.

Food for thought perhaps... or perhaps junk, you decide Wink

No i guess not. I gathered that f6 would lead to wild positions. I have seen some people play 2...Nf6 and win after 3.Bxf6 exf6. I am sure 2...g6!? might be a useful alternative too. I'll keep looking. Thanks again.

there was some discussion of this on another thread i believe, 2..f6 3Bh4 Nh6 is playable and i have seen some games and analysis of Morozevich where he plays 2Nc6 followed by 3...f6. Can get very wild though and probably not what you're after if you wanna get Queens Gambit Declined type positions!

This is ever so frustrating for me when i face this after 1. d4 d5. 2...Nf6 runs straight into the swap, which leaves black with problems defending his kingside and centre and a relatively passive game. I always seem to fall into awkward positions playing 2...Nd7 (aiming for 3...Ngf6 and 4...e6) Cry. Any suggestions? I tend to aim for QGD formations against 1.d4.
