Well, personally, I think you should ignore all of this  Grin, buy a copy of John Watson's Gambit Guide to the Modern Benoni, and take it from there.  If you want sharp, unbalanced, tactical play, you really can't do much better than the Modern Benoni   8)

I would say that the Chigorin Defense (1.d4 d5 2.c4 Nc6) is an excellent option if you like sharp positions with both sides play for a win. It was never even close to be refuted, it is not well known and Morozevic used the variation 1.d4 d5 2.c4 Nc6 3.Nc3 Nf6 some years before.

By far the sharpest non gambit defense against 1.d4 is the Iljin-Genewsky. Play f5, e6, d6, Nf6, Be7, o-o in some move order and prepare e6-e5. Thanks to the asymmetrical pawn structure sharp play is guaranteed.
White has boring lines available against the KID and the Budapest or can avoid these (beginning with 2.Nf3), but not against the IG. Moreover the IG is possible after 1.c4, 1.Nf3, 1.b3, 1.g3 and 1.b4.
Strategy is quite simple; tactics are very complicated. In my opinion Williams even has left out the sharpest lines Black can play.
Play through some games of Russian GM Igor Naumkin and be amazed.

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

Why not the Ne4 Budapest?

You said it yourself, you are better at tactics than strategy.  Well, 1 d4 Nf6 c4 e5 dxe5 Ne4! is great fun.  Probably can score you many quick wins and requires NO theory!

It's a documented gambit, but I doubt any white players expect it!

Still fianchettoing queenside Sutter?!  (Also a fun opening that Sutter specializes in.)

Strange question, the Dutch is an obvious choice if you want tactical chess without too much theory. For example, pick up Simon Williams' book on the Classical Dutch and you'll be well on your way towards having a nice pointscorer 'defence' as black. The Leningrad is also nice though there's more theory and white is more likely to have met it before and worked something out, but stay away from the Stonewall if you don't like strategic battles.

My thoughts on the openings you mentioned

Out of the three openings you cite the KID is in my experience the one against which white just can't avoid tactical/dynamic play. As it is often rather sharp there is (as you say) a lot of theory, which is probably a price one might have to pay.

The Budapest isn't too bad in that respect either, as long as one is willing to play some more risky lines, e.g. in the Bf4 variation one might have to go for the g7-g5 lines if one wants to avoid boredom (in fact otherwise white can choose what kind of game he wants by playing either Nbd2 or Nc3).

In the Dutch it somewhat depends on what kind of Dutch you are playing - Stonewall, Leningrad, Classical, something else? But I feel that play is often more strategic here.

This sounds like the ENGLISH DEFENCE is absolutly right for you! 1.d4 e6 2.c4 b6 (A40). Take a look at the games f.e. GM Tony Miles, GM Alex Shabalov, GM Edvin Kengis, to name a few of the gurus.

In the case of 1.d4 e6 2.e4 b6 you can take a look at the complete opening-repertoire of IM Filipovic with black.

Hi, I have been playing these defences against 1.d4:

1.Budapest 2.KID 3.Dutch

The Budapest is fine if white doesn't play "solid", kinda boring you know. The KID is also fun sometimes, but there is much theory to know.. The Dutch i don't play so much. But which of these openings should be my "main" system against 1.d4? I'm around 2000 ICC... I'm better at tactics than positional play, "solid" positions bore me to death...  8)
