I just noticed that some of these positions can come from a line of the Alapin.  After 1.e4 c5 2.c3 e5 3.Nf3 Nc6.  Although usually in that variation Black answers d4 with ...exd4 and here he's already played cxd4.

Yes 8.dxc6! is rather strong.  Embarrassed  Actually I'd been looking at the position without the White pawn on c3 and without a Black knight on c6 (although I can't explain why).  Um, I was just seeing if anybody was paying attention.  Yeah, that's it.  Grin

Isn't 8.dxc6 a problem for Black then?!
Palkovi gives 4...Nc6 5.Bc4!? Nf6?! 6.Ng5 d5 7.exd5 Nxd5...., MNb.
This line may be better for White, but 7...Nxd5 looks awfully cooperative.  Black might be OK after a move like 7...Bd6!?

Palkovi gives 4...Nc6 5.Bc4!? Nf6?! 6.Ng5 (or 6.cxd4 exd4 7.o-o Bc5 8.e5 compare Max Lange Attack) d5 7.exd5 Nxd5 8.o-o! Be7 9.Nxf7! Kxf7 10.Qf3+ Ke6 11.Re1 Na5 12.Bd3 with a strong attack.
Another option is 8.Qb3!? Jagupov-Piesnack, Berlin 1996.

In Bücker's 1986 edition of "Der Geier" the following variation is given: 1.d4 c5 2.e4 cxd4 3.Nf3 e5 4.c3 (4.Bc4 Nf6!) 4...Nc6! 5.cxd4 (5.Bc4 Nf6!;5.Bb5 dxc3) 5...d5 6.exd5 Qxd5 7.Nc3 Bb4 8.Bd2 Bxc3 9.Bxc3 e4! 10.Ne5.  This is a tranposition to an Alapin Sicilian where black may be OK, but perhaps not with Bücker's original preference of 10...Nh6.  Also I think I've read that 10.Nd2 is preferred now so it seems White keeps an advantage after 4...Nc6 as well.

Palkovi in his book on the Morra Gambit spends more than 6 pages on 4.c3 but does not mention other options. From a general point of view, White is glad to play a Morra with e7-e5 as the weak points d6 and d5 supply enough compensation for the lacking pawn. Here is Palkovi's main line: 4...dxc3 5.Nxc3 d6 6.Bc4 Nc6 7.Ng5 Nh6 8.o-o Be7 9.Qh5 o-o 10.h3 Nd4 11.f4 Ne6 12.Nxe6 fxe6 13.f5 d5 14.Bb3 d4 15.Bxh6 gxh6 16.Ne2 Qb6 17.Kh1 Bg5 18.h4 Be3 19.Rf3 with the initiative. I have not looked at it, but Palkovi's analysis and evaluation is not always reliable.
I have played some games as White, but lost the notation. I won all of them, but Black's defense was rather weak in all cases.

1 e4 c5 2 d4 cxd4 3 Nf3 e5

Can anyone provide information on this line for the white side?

The lines analogous to the Morra with an early c3 (4 c3 at the earliest, but maybe delayed for a move or two) don't seem too appealing as the Morra gambit never struck my fancy in the first place.  But I realize that c3 is probably white's best chance to aim for advantage, and I wonder if anyone has experience with the line or can shed some light on it?

However, supposing white can do without c3, is there any way to prove an advantage?  Black has ample resources, yes, but with a mistake he can easily blow it.

Just providing some thoughts,
